Old Power Station/WWII Relic — Attraction in Tokyo

Former power station for a Hitachi aircraft factory that now is a WWII landmark. Amazing that it still exists. Basically a pockmarked building surrounded by different relics from it's operational days such as wire and machinery that used to be in the building. There's a couple monuments inside the fence area. Also a few relics from that same era such as a piece of a water tower and part of a wall. Around five information panels that are written in both Japanese and English give you the backgrounds about the items. Unfortunately I visited on a rainy Saturday when the building was closed. However I still walked around the structure and read the information signs.

東京郊外ののどかな公園の中にぽつねんと屹立する穴ぼこだらけの建物は、本当に本当に遠くなってしまった戦争の痕跡を私たちに提示してくれる、今の時世ではまことに貴重な建物である。

穴ぼこは米軍による三度にわたる空襲の痕であり、驚くことに、平成時代までこのままの姿で、現役として使われていた。 なお、同様の歴史を辿った給水塔については、予算の関係から、塔の土台部分の一部を除いて、取り壊されてしまった。変電所跡の建物の手前に土台が無造作に置かれている。

公園では子供たちがボール遊びをしている。

まだ私が小さい頃は、戦争経験者もたくさんいたし、戦争の悲惨さをことさら押し付けられているような気持ちがして、この手のものを見ることは気が進まなかった。

とまれ、戦争の場を経験した方々はもとより、銃後の民として幼少期を過ごしていらっしゃった方々でさえ、もはや少数派となりつつある。 戦争は遠くなりにけり。そして、あまりにも長い戦後が続いている。

正直なところ、私はこの建物を見て戦争の悲惨さを思うことは無かった。想像力がそこまでは働かないくらいに戦後は長く続いている。 しかしながら、日本にもこのような痕を無差別に受けるような時代があったことに対しては、大いに思いを馳せたのであった。
