Toshima City Morikazu Kumagai Art Museum — Attraction in Tokyo

Before coming here, I had watched Kumagai’s film, and visiting afterwards felt truly meaningful. They have built the museum on the area where he lived, in a very beautiful and modern way.

Spread across three thoughtfully arranged floors, the gallery lets you see works from different periods and how his style evolved, which is truly impressive. There are also some of his personal belongings on display, and the top floor is dedicated to a collection of nice family photographs from his youth to older ages and there are some great art books.. Such an inspiring place!

On the ground floor, at Cafe Kaya — named after his daughter Kaya and also displaying her so good ceramics — you can relax with wonderful art books also over tea or coffee with handmade cups of Kaya. Also the ladies working there are really cute and helpful!

It’s definitely a place...

I love this place ! From the outlier to the inside, so much to see, the intimate setting let you get lost in the work of a once lived, incredible artist and their artistic family. Always touches my heart differently in each visit and I will keep returning.

我が新日本ジュエルギャラリー事務所には、保管を兼ねて有名作家の絵を壁に飾ってあった。 当時、熊谷守一の「猫」と坂本繁二郎の「馬」の絵が飾ってあった。

中川一政の絵が贋作ではないかと悩んでいたＦさんは熊谷守一の絵を見て「この人の絵も贋作が多いんだよね」と一言。 熊谷守一は岐阜の裕福な家に生まれ、３歳で父親の住む二人の妾とその子供のいる家で過ごしたため、子供ながら冷めた目で世間を見るようになった。

長じて東京の池袋モンパルナスと呼ばれた椎名町千早に居を構えたが、貧乏画家では生活ができず、裕福な友人からの支援でかろうじて生活をしていた。

４２歳の時に裕福な家から嫁をむかえ夫人の実家から生活費をたよりにしていたが、相変わらず絵も売れず、治療ができず子供を亡くす貧乏生活から抜け出せずいた。

そんな折、愛知県の資産家・木村定三が熊谷守一の作品に惚れ、買取の個展を開くなどし、熊谷の名は晩年にかけて広く日本の画壇に名を知られるようになった。 椎名町の平屋、１５坪の庭のある自宅から２０年以上も外出したこともない守一画伯はその仙人のような風貌も相まって人気となり絵の値段も沸騰し、人々や画商が仙人宅に押し寄せ大変なことになっていた。

しかし、熊谷画伯の絵が世に知られ、値段が急騰するにつれ贋作が巷にあふれるようになった。 その一つの原因が画風にある。 この単純化されたイラスト風の画風をまねるのは絵心のある人にとってそう難しくはない。（写真）

熊谷画伯は昔からこのような画風ではなく、ごくオーソドックスな油絵を描いていた。（写真） 晩年になって大きく画風が変化した。

有名画家になり、お金も入ってきたが、熊谷画伯の生活は変わらず、文化勲章も辞退し、１９７７年８月に他界した。 先生の住まいの跡には豊島区立熊谷守一美術館が建っている。
