Kijō Park — Attraction in Tsuchiura

The central part of the former Tsuchiura Castle (土浦城) now kept as a public park. Although much of the original structures were lost, some of the moats/gates/turrets have been reconstructed or preserved. This was the residence of the feudal lord and the government of his domain (Tsuchiura-han) during Edo period. Being located near the Kasumi-ga-ura (lake), the town of Tsuchiura was often hit by floods. However, this castle was always above water, looking like a turtle shell. Hence it was nicknamed as "Kijō" (亀城, turtle castle) which was the namesake of the park. (The name of this park in English was incorrectly registered as "Lady Park" on Google Map, which perhaps came from a confusion with a completely different word "Kijo = 貴女". I corrected the name...

A nice spot overall, but smaller than expected. Trees, foliage etc were nice.

I was a bit taken back by the monkeys kept here too. The cage seems like the smallest you'd want for these monkeys, and there are no toys at all... Just a tree and the ground. I think their everyday must be pretty sad. It should really be renovated to a cage at least double or triple the size and give them something interesting to do! I guess it can't be helped that they're there, but they should at...

市街地中心にあり、輪郭式平城で、別名は亀城(きじょう)と呼ばれている。ジオで見れば、楕円形の微高地を中心に築かれ、桜川の洪水で土浦の街が水没しても、土浦城だけは免れて浮かぶ亀の甲羅のように見えたことから「亀城(きじょう)」と呼ばれたのだろう。 現在は、土浦城址は亀城(きじょう)公園として整備されて、土浦市立博物館が隣接し、「太鼓櫓門」が現存しているのみだ。もともと天守はないが、「東櫓」「西櫓」が復元されている。 2011年の東日本大震災で、「太鼓櫓門」「東櫓」「西櫓」とすべての建造物が破損してしまったが、現在は修理し一般公開しいる。 最初の築城の伝承はとても古く、平安時代の天慶年間(938年～947年)に平将門(たいらのまさかど)が砦(とりで)を築いて、常陸・府中城を攻めたともされる。 鎌倉時代にも館として立地し、室町時代は永享年間(1429年～1441年)に「今泉三郎(若泉三郎)」が土浦城主となる。若泉氏(今泉氏)は八田知家の後裔で、前回投稿の主人公小田城主の小田氏に従っていて、負け武将の「小田氏治(おだうじはる)」が敗戦した時、一門の家臣「菅谷勝貞(すげのやかつさだ)」が守るこの「土浦城」へ敗走したことが幾度もある。 「菅谷勝貞(すげのやかつさだ)」は、霞ヶ浦から桜川～利根川の水運の利権を得ており、生涯、小田氏に忠誠を誓い、上杉謙信や佐竹義重らとも戦った。子の「菅谷政貞(すげのやまささだ)」は、軍師とも言える名将で、主君・小田氏治が苦難になっても支え、本拠の小田城が奪われると、小田氏治を「土浦城」にまたも迎えては、小田城を何度も奪還する働きをした。驚きは小田城主「小田氏治(おだうじはる)」は、家臣や領民に愛された武将であることだ。 「菅谷政貞」と子の「菅谷範政(すげのやのりまさ)は、1590年、豊臣秀吉の小田原攻めの直前に「小田氏治(おだうじはる)」が佐竹義重に敗れて「土浦城」も失った。 しかし、豊臣氏家臣の浅野長政から、小田氏に対する忠心を評価され、江戸城に入った徳川家康の旗本として加わり、菅谷範政は約5000石にて、子孫は幕末まで続いた。 関東が徳川領になると、「土浦城」を含む結城領11万1000石は、結城氏の養子となった徳川家康の2男・結城秀康に与えられ、「土浦城」には多賀谷村広が入った。 結城秀康が関ケ原の戦いのあと、越前・福井城に移ると、松平信一が3万5000石にて土浦城主となり、松平信一と養子の松平信吉が、現在の土浦城へと改修した。 城主は変わりながら、1687年に老中となった土屋政直が「土浦城」に入り、以後9万5000石として、幕末まで土屋氏の領地として続いた。 1825年に、有名な泥棒の「鼠小僧」(ねずみ小僧)が捕縛されたが、最初に捕まったのは土浦藩の江戸屋敷...
