A public Free park Part of the jhbcity parks and zoo and comparing it to other parks it’s way more decent, safer and bigger. Yes the toilets might not be well maintained and the fountain and ponds aren’t functioning but the poetic rose garden and the scenery of the Emmarentia dam and the vast green surrounding are worth a visit. Activities Whether it’s a family/friends picnic or a romantic picnic even on days where it’s packed you can have the privacy you need , you just need to be more adventurous and walk around to get the right spot. The dog walking side of the park may have dog poo there and there which some dog owners neglect picking after their dog 🐕 drops a nasty one but nonetheless you can also get your step count and have a light walk around the park I’ve covered around 6 km from just a light loop 🔁 around the park. There is a small kids playground incase you forgot the little ones ball. Recently they no longer allow cameras 📸 inside but a little tip they have about 4 entry points if not more.

It is a massive botanical garden with beautiful variety. Across the road there is even a canoeing company if you fancy some fun in the water. There is a food area near the kids playground, many beautiful themed garden areas, large grassy parks ideal for picnics, as well as a gorgeous dam- stunning at sunset! Plenty of parking areas to choose from depending what activity you want to do. There’s also a side where dogs are allowed so you can take your dogs for a free run/ swim in the dam (they can never resist so pack a towel). There’s a mini gym area with nice clean equipment. Only drawback is it’s in the sun a lot of the day so you will most likely sweat a lot when you use it 😊. If you are going to order at the food stall, be prepared for an unfriendly face because the lady who has always been there to take our orders doesn’t seem to like her job very much and works very slowly. There has been some good work on improving the entrance closest to the dam lately and making it feel safer with a security guard.

Pictures Copyright ©️ blackjohannes. Pictures as is and was not Edited or manipulated. The botanical gardens leave you with mixed reactions. The rose garden is a mess. It looks sad and neglected. Hardly any roses and the water fountains are dry. Parking areas are better demarcated and there is now an "official" entrance near the rose garden for visitors. If you use the other entrances you don't have to pay. There are guards now to enforce bylaws. However people still walk dogs at wrong places, ball games where not allowed and most annoying is the many number of people with loud sound systems. Terrible. People openly drink alcohol in the parking areas from bottles and many having a picnic openly drinks in public. The grass is well kept and so are most trees. Many areas are suitable for picnic. The dog park is a good walking area as well, as long as people keep their dogs on leash. The public toilets are vandalized and bad condition. What lack all the years is a good restaurant or kiosk. The kiddies playing area is in good condition and offers a variety to kids. Also many paved walk ways to walk on around a very large area of the park. No pictures are allowed for gatherings of more than 15 people. In is mind boggling they in an Era when most people have cellphone cameras and many phone cameras have become so good, that there is a bylaw to get 21 day permission for pictures of groups to be taken. That with "professional" cameras.

Need a break from mortar & brick then drive to Emmerentia dam and loose yourself in the beautiful out-stretched Johannesburg Botanical Garden. This historic city park has much to offer. Take a walk around the dams on well manicured paths or find your own way through the grass whist watching the red bishops nesting in the reeds. Enjoy the wide variety of local and international trees and check-up on their name tags if you are interested. In summer the rose garden with its magnificent view of the fountain is really special. If you are a romantic, then you will certainly enjoy the Shakespeare garden where one can get married. Walk your dog, ride your bike, feed the ducks or host your kiddies party in the shade of a large tree. Or just put down a blanket and reach for a book whilst munching on some goodies from your picnic basket. Enjoy one of Jozi’s gems.

The park is open and not crowded during lockdown adjusted level 3. The operating hours are 09h00 to 18h00 but note that only two entrances are currently being used. These are the two main gates on Thomas Bowler St and Olifants Road. The park has become strict about the closing time and adhering to Covid-19 regulations. Your details might be taken when entering. Wearing a mask is mandatory even if you are running but there is plenty of room for social distancing of course. Perfect for walking, dog walking, running, or just having a picnic in one of the beautiful gardens. Be sure to also visit the Serial Thrillers shop at the Thomas Bowler St main gate. Dave sells great books and games at very affordable prices. Importantly, entry is free! Please like this review if you found it useful.
