This pyramid is the biggest (width wise) in the world, but don’t expect this to look like a classic pyramid…..in fact, it’s hard to tell that it is a pyramid due to its surrounding vegetation. It’s great that visiting this site is 100% free if you are merely climbing to the top, hanging out up at the site area, and visiting the church. Get ready to lose your breath walking up the stairs and hill! The views of the city and surrounding volcanos is pretty awesome too! To visit the actual museum, one will need to purchase a ticket at the booth on site there. Most of the museum literature and explanations will be in Spanish …just an FYI. What was very disappointing was being told by locals that I could go inside of the “tunnels” and go inside the pyramid, yet being told by security that this was no longer the case since people to COVID. I received lots of conflicting information about the tunnels…so I really don’t know the truth.

The pins on Google Maps are all wrong. The archaeology site is on the west side of the pyramid and that is where you pay. That site is a single route and the signage is very good at explaining the history of the pyramid. From the west side you can also take a trail up to the church for free. The church can also be accessed from the NE corner by another free trail. On the east side of the pyramid, on the street, there is the entrance to the tunnels used by archaeologists to study the pyramid. The tunnels are about 5' 10" high, narrow, and everyone has to go through single file. It can be crowded with large tour groups and school tours. When I was in there a woman had a panic attach so don't go in if you are scared of confined spaces.

The place is very nice, but signs for the entrance are misleading. They tried to sell me a guide (as I was only one visitor who didn't speak Spanish), and I was supposed to pay as I was a whole group. No one told me at the entrance that there was a museum in there, and I saw no signs. Found lately when I already went out of the city . There is a big open marketplace outside and an amusement park, so it is very loud. It didn't bother me at all. For me, it was as very peaceful as it was, but some visitors may find it annoying. Make sure to visit the marketplace outside for a lot of nice souvenirs. So, the place is great, just the signs and personnel are a bit odd. Oh, and the tunnels are still closed because of covid.... it's may 2024...

The Zona Arqueológica de Cholula, or the Archaeological Zone of Cholula, is a remarkable historical site located in Cholula, near Puebla, Mexico. It is home to the largest pyramid in the world in terms of volume, the Great Pyramid of Cholula, also known as Tlachihualtepetl.

The archaeological site covers a vast area and showcases the rich cultural heritage of the ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, particularly the influence of the pre-Columbian city of Cholula. Exploring the site allows...

We were so excited to visit this pyramid considering its historical significance but we’re extremely disappointed to find that the tunnels were closed indefinitely due to the pandemic. The reason for the closure is that the tunnels have poor ventilation. We came way out of our way to visit and spent a lot of money on travel and accommodations, and now we are here in Cholula for more days than we know what to do with.

The fee was $90 MXN to walk around the perimeter of the exposed ruins....

Largest Pyramid of Cholula a Mesoamerican site in Mexico and before the Spanish conquest, a sacred city and important trading center. The Spanish Cortes called it the most beautiful city outside Spain, a human settlement for over 3000 years, the pyramid more than 2000 years old and largest in the world. Powerful Mexican cultures of the Olmecs, the Toltecs and later Aztecs, the founders of Cholula fled elsewhere, showing their invaders a clean pair of heels. Cholula had strong ties not...
