One of the most famous attractions in Savannakhet. The Dinosaur Museum is very small and probably not up to international standards (it's the only museum I've ever visited where the climate control was only turned on because I arrived), but it is a unique visit for sure. The dinosaur, Tangvayosaurus, is evidently the pride of Savannakhet, shown on murals, street arches, and even the can of the local brew BeerSavan. It was found and identified in this province. The bones of this dinosaur are spread out through the cases in two rooms that make up the entire museum, along with a few other mixed specimens.

One thing I really liked is the display of the outline of Tangvayosaurus in lights on the wall, with some of the bones hung up inside it. It's simple, but gives a great feeling of how massive this creature was, which you don't fully get from looking at bones under glass.

Entry costs 10,000 kip or...

We had a superb hour-long visit with the geologist curator speaking Thai. He was very friendly and most obliging with excellent interpersonal teaching skill. A small building with an awful lot in it if you are interested already in geology and palaeontology. We learned a lot and got very close to wonderful, massive specimens. It far exceeded expectations. At Thai Baht 20 for entrance, we still recommend it for imaginative, well-behaved children and casual tourists on a quick visit. We will definitely go back and our visit gave rise to...

Small but charming place in Savannakhet. The entrance fee is just 10,000kip. There are plenty of real bones of dinosaurs and fossils found in Savannakhet only. There are English and French descriptions as well. The uncle who is the manager (?) The museum is really enthusiastic to guide me around and kind enough to allow me to touch the bones that are stored in the drawers, and even take photos of me. However, it is a small museum...so 10-20 minutes is...

It's small. It could use some freshening up. BUT the artefacts are worth the visit, AND the museum guide is more than enthousiastic, which compensates for his limited English - which is still better than my Lao. When you show some interest, he will open the drawers of the cabinets to show more artefacts.

Awesome experience!! A very small museum but the gentleman who owns it spoke a good amount of English and toured us through the whole place and told us about each item. Very cool to see real dinosaur bones that were found right here in Savannakhet. Highly recommend coming here!
