We used the Sabah Parks authority to climb to the top and they were great! Just book way in advance as they have limited amount of trekkers a day (a good thing!)

Bring sun hat, rain poncho and umbrella, water proof shoes and change of socks, and a good vibe and all will be fine. Warm sweater, windproof jacket and a light hat for the final ascend as it can get chilly.

If you are not climbing the mountain you can enjoy several short trails. Here you can go with guides or by yourself. Note that the best bird activity is at dawn, the bird photographers deal with difficult light most of the time in the forest.

The only thing I didn't like was the leaf blowers that the lodges inside the park use. Horrible noise pollution and is used seemingly every day to keep every little leaf off the grass and parking...hence...

I do think the rm50 foreigner entrance fee is expensive, considering the state of some of the trails. Particularly Kiau View, I didnโ€™t finish the trail as there was an old fallen tree and no obvious path or sign around it & I didnโ€™t want to get lost. The boardwalks were broken and the path just seemed like it needed some TLC.

Overall though, the Silau Silau trail was great as was Bukit Tupai & Burang trails. I think Mempening is in good condition too, though I was only on it for small sections. As a solo female hiker who is no expert or a particularly fit person I really enjoyed my 3 hours exploring the trails. They are very well signposted. It is muddy and wet due to the climate, so be prepared & cover up as much of your body as possible to avoid mosquitoes...

Very disappointing National Park. If you want to walk through jungle forrest and not see anything else then this is the right place for you. We walked 2.5 hours on a couple of different trails that the AllTrails app suggested would have views - there were none. The trails are poorly maintained with broken steps and a lot of water damage. The signage is very bad. We could not find the "visitor centre" and no-one we asked could help. When we drove, in the guard / ticket office didn't offer any help. We never did find any useful information except to follow the trails on AllTrails app. Many of the signs along the trails were broken or misleading - we got lost a couple of times. A waste of time and money as far as we...

Kinabalu Park, the World Heritage Site covers an area of 754 sq km was gazetted as a park in 1964.The basis for the establishment of a protected area in Kinabalu were formed after a report from the Royal Society Kinabalu Scientific expedition in 1962-1964 led by Prof. Corner. It is the first Park in the Malaysian Borneo's state of Sabah. Its main feature is Mount Kinabalu (4,095.2 m), the highest mountain between the Himalayas and New Guinea. Its slope is home to a rich assemblage of plants and animal species. It is a hot spot of particularly the plant biodiversity with affinities to flora from the Himalayas, China, Australia, Malay Peninsula, as well as pan-tropical region.
