Verdala Palace is an imposing castle built by the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. It comands spectacular views of the sourrounding areas particularly of the little forest consisting of acient trees planted by the Knights. These trees include Aleppo pine, Aurecaria, Ash, Elm, Mediterranean Oak, Olive, Almond, Carob, Citrus and Pomegranate.
The area was created by Grand Master Verdala as a hunting ground mainly for birds, rabbit and deer. So the castle served as a hunting lodge and was frequently visied by knights, noble men and their foreign visitors.
Over the years the castle saw various modifications. Even during the times of the Knights it was extended and the British also made some internal modifications.
Nowadays the palace is designated as the President's official summer residence altough it is hardly ever used for this purpose. Within the castle grounds one finds several other buildings including a chappel, staff quarters and stables.
The castle is closed for the general public except for special occassions like Imnarja on 29th June which is the day when the patron saints of Malta, St. Peter and St. Paul are celebrated. On this day the sourrounding gardens play host to various Maltese folklore shows and farming...

The place is converted into a pathway full of lighted animals, flowers, snowmans and Christmas sculptures. It is a Great experience for the children.
