This place is magical especially in winter, with the lovely sea breeze and golden sand. Perfect to take the kids to fly a kite or play beach games. The sea temperature never drops too low but swimming in bad weather is not advisable and strong currents are very common. If you don’t see the locals swimming then stay out of the water. The location is home to a lot of history - there are the remains of a Roman villa (on the left side of the beach) where a lot of terracotta amphoras were found. On the far right of the beach one can find a massive boulder with a cylindrical hole bored in it. This was a primitive type of cannon known locally as “fugass”. There is also an underwater wall which had been built to prevent vessels coming in to shore. There is also a wreck which emerges from under the sand (under the water) depending on the sea currents. The beach is extremely busy in summer as it is the biggest beach on the island. There are Lifeguards posted throughout the day and access to the beach in summer is through a boardwalk, although it is very difficult to get into the water if you are confined to a wheelchair. There are showers (which have been closed due to covid ) and public toilets. There are two restaurants, with the smaller one being much better to eat at. Many food vans are on the main road with some interesting options. One can buy inflatable mattresses and other beach paraphernalia from the vans close by including fresh local fruit. One will be pestered by deck chair/umbrella rentals which are not worth it if you are going to be there for a short time or you intend to go down late to the beach as these people start to dismantle their business round about 1700 to 1800. There are water sports like pedalboats, canoes, speed boats and others. One word of advice, take some thing to clean your feet from the sand before you enter the car, especially if...

Read moreOur favourite beach in north Gozo! Sandy, and wide, including in peak season it will not feel like hopeless crowded. A couple of bars at the entrance of the beach help your beach day planning: not too much to carry: you just can go there and enjoy the beach Matese cuisine (pizzas and pastas, and the salads are worth it. Ice creams and drinks). Also they have a parasol and sun beds service, that you can rent for the day or half day. In the peak of the summer season a must. Also recommended to bring your own parasol and a lot of UV protective cream! You have to find the good entrance into the sea. It has a shallow bottom, but in many places very rocky after the sandy bottom. I will recommend to have rock shoes and use them. You can easily swim until the line that protects the swimmers from the boat berthing area. There the depth is going to be 2 or 3 meters max. I never found strong currents but always be careful: you are now 50 to 70 meters from the shore (I estimated). Also you can explore the hills to the east and west if you feel a little bit more adventurous. Regarding parking there are 2 areas closer to the beach, but unless you arrive early (before 10:00am) or in the late afternoon, they will be packed. Also it is possible to park on the entry road, but usually you will have to walk up to...
