The first group of pilgrims who went to Ganga Talao were from the village of Triolet and it was led by Pandit Giri Gossayne from Terre Rouge in 1898. It is considered the most sacred Hindu place in Mauritius The Shiv Mandir is located on the bank of the lake and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This is a very famous Hindu temple in Mauritius. It has a huge status of Lord Shiva and has a pond in the center full of fishes.

The place is not easily reachable through public transport. Should visit via tourist bus, cab or own / rented car. Some walking on elevations will be required so not a elder friendly place. Should not plan during late evenings as the roads are not lit and there is no public transport anyway.

Every year during Mahashivratri people from all over th island walk to the temple and celebrate the festival in large gatherings.
