Review of Grand Bassin:

Grand Bassin, also known as Ganga Talao, is a sacred lake located in the mountainous region of Mauritius. Considered one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites outside of India, Grand Bassin holds religious and cultural significance for the local Hindu community. Here's my review of Grand Bassin:

Spiritual Atmosphere: Grand Bassin exudes a profound spiritual atmosphere. As you approach the site, you can feel a sense of tranquility and reverence in the air. The serene lake, surrounded by lush green hills and temples, creates a peaceful ambiance that invites visitors to reflect and connect with their spiritual side.

Temples and Shrines: Grand Bassin is home to several temples and shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and other Hindu deities. The main attraction is the majestic 33-meter tall statue of Lord Shiva, known as the Mangal Mahadev. The intricate architecture and vibrant colors of the temples are captivating, and devotees can offer prayers and participate in religious rituals.

Festivals and Celebrations: Grand Bassin comes alive during Hindu festivals, especially Maha Shivaratri, which is celebrated with great fervor. Thousands of devotees gather at the lake, clad in traditional attire, to participate in processions, prayers, and cultural performances. Witnessing these vibrant celebrations can be a truly immersive and memorable experience.

Scenic Beauty: Grand Bassin is located in a picturesque setting amidst the mountains and lush vegetation. The surrounding natural beauty adds to the overall charm of the place. Visitors can take leisurely walks around the lake, enjoy the fresh air, and soak in the scenic views.

Peaceful Retreat: Grand Bassin offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether you are a devotee seeking spiritual solace or a visitor interested in cultural exploration, the serene environment of Grand Bassin provides a calming and introspective experience.

Accessibility: Grand Bassin is located in the Savanne district of Mauritius, and while it is a bit remote, it is accessible by road. It is recommended to hire a taxi or join a guided tour to reach the site, as public transportation options may be limited.

In conclusion, Grand Bassin is a place of spiritual significance and natural beauty in Mauritius. The spiritual atmosphere, stunning temples, and cultural celebrations make it an essential visit for those interested in Hinduism or seeking a peaceful retreat. Whether you are a devotee or a curious traveler, a visit to Grand Bassin offers a unique glimpse into the religious and cultural fabric...

Ganga Talao, also known as Grand Bassin, is one of the most enchanting and spiritually significant destinations in Mauritius. Situated in the heart of lush green mountains, this sacred crater lake offers a serene atmosphere that invites visitors to unwind and reflect. As a revered Hindu pilgrimage site, it holds immense cultural and spiritual importance, with temples and shrines dedicated to various deities, making it a fascinating place to explore. One of the lake’s most striking features is the towering 33-meter statue of Lord Shiva at the entrance. This magnificent statue, with its intricate details and powerful presence, symbolizes the deep spiritual traditions of the island and immediately captures the attention of all who visit. Not far from Shiva, the impressive 30-meter statue of Durga Mata adds to the sacred ambiance. Depicting the goddess riding a lion and armed with various weapons, this statue embodies strength and divine protection, beautifully complementing the lake’s spiritual aura. Visiting Ganga Talao during the Maha Shivaratri festival is especially memorable, as thousands of devotees make their pilgrimage to the lake, chanting prayers and offering rituals. Whether one is seeking spiritual solace, cultural insights, or simply a moment of tranquility, Ganga Talao offers a unique and unforgettable experience that blends natural beauty with profound...

The sacred lake of Grand Bassin is the holiest place in Mauritius. In 1972, a little bit of sacred water from the Ganges River (India) was mixed with Grand Bassin lake. It was a symbolic act of connection between the Ganges River and the Grand Bassin lake. In Grand Bassin, Maha Shivaratri festival is celebrated every year according to the Hindu religious calendar.

On Sunday, May the 1st, 2016, my wife and I were presumably the only Christians visitors in Grand Bassin. It was a great spiritual experience. We met there a lot of fantastic and lovely Hindu pilgrims. For us, it was an excellent occasion to indulge in tasty pleasures such as hot tea with sweet milk and Indian specialities.

Grand Basin is a very beautiful and specific place. There are a lot of sculptures dedicated to the major Hindu deities.

My first picture below my opinion depicts Shirdi Sai Baba (the spiritual master who is regarded by his devotees as a saint and a fakir), Lord Shiva and Lakshmi (the Goddess of good fortune, wealth and prosperity). The second picture depicts Ganesh Chaturthi, the Deva of wisdom and patron of scientists and science. The third picture depicts Surya, the God of Light and Day.

There is a huge car park. WC available. Access to shower as well, if someone needs. Grand Bassin is a place worth visiting....

I visited Mauritius in 2016 and was mesmerized to visit the Ganga Talao. It has 33 metre statue of Lord Shiva outside the temple. Also, there was under construction status of Maa Durga. History: Ganga Talao (commonly known as Grand Bassin) is a crater lake situated in a secluded mountain area in the district of Savanne, deep in the heart of Mauritius. The Shiv Mandir is located on the bank of the lake and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are temples dedicated to other Gods including Lord Hanuman, Goddess Ganga, and Lord Ganesh along the Grand Bassin.

Worth the visit, it is a little dirty after their main event once a year. There is a ton of parking. Very peaceful to visit. No meat food is allowed at the site. It is vegetarian, no smoking or alcohol either. Take the time to go down to the lake and enjoy the peace and serenity. If you are a meditation fundi then this is the place to go. A constant ohm sound is played The only problem is the monkeys, make sure not to carry anything in your hands. They will think it’s food. The locals do feed them, so they expect food.

A great place to visit to appreciate architecture, great views and Hinduism. You are greeted with large statues when you approach the place, but as you delve further in you see a spectacular temple on a lake, followed by several monuments and shrines to several Hindu Gods. It is all well presented and maintained. The place can get busy with visitors, but that is because it is a place worth visiting. Also dotted around are monkeys. The place also has a very large car park.
