A must see place when visiting Mauritius. It is a religious site also known as Ganga Talao (Ganga Lake) or Grand Bassin. This interesting lake, which is housed in the crater of an extinct volcano, is not only absolutely gorgeous and serene, it’s considered to be a sacred lake, which according to legend, is connected to the holy river Ganges in India. The sacred water is used in prayer. It is surrounded by many wonderful temples and the most spectacular is the Hanuman temple found on a hill where you can enjoy the gorgeous surrounding views. It is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage site where Maha Shivratree is celebrated during month of February or March every year. During your visit you will be stunned by the gigantic statue of Lord Shiva smiling at you. The statue is 108 ft high and beautifully crafted. On the right site of Lord Shiva, another impressive statue of Durga Maa.
Multiple parking space and toilet facilities are provided at Grand Bassin/ Ganga Talao, and entry to the site is free. So enjoy a leisurely walk around the perimeters of the lake.
