First of all just contact Eat Mexico in order to do this safely and with some guidance. Adrian (our guide) is a cook/chef/culinary graduate (as we’re our other guides with other companies). Which made talking food a no brainer. He explained much more than I was bargain for about how the local “system” works all the way up! We moved effortlessly through the market (once we made it past the tents). The true market is very well lit and friendly. I don’t think there were many glances our way since he spends so much time there. Don’t expect your group to be more than 4 since there is not room. The only leer we got the 5 days in CDMX was entering the market and in Polanco the locals were amazed that we went there at all. Great food, great local guide information and really good freakin food!

This place is on every YouTube travel channel and in all the guidebooks. I suppose it is a must visit, but you don’t really need to go here to find good food or discounted goods. So if you don’t like crowds and or large confusing markets, avoid this place. It is huge with different sections. You’d have to visit multiple times to be comfortable here. Also beware if it’s been raining, the streets surrounding the market, which are actually part of the market, become a muddy mess. With all that said, I found excellent food and the entire area is worth a stroll through.

Be prepared to be overwhelmed. Miles of pathways for fruits, vegetables, fish, chicken, beef, and pork. The market seems to start blocks before you even get to the building. You can find almost anything there. Lots of household items, clothing, street food, and candy. I spend 2 hours walking 6 miles around and in the Mercado. It's a must visit for tourists. Locals will tell you don't go it's only food. If you miss this Mercado you will miss a great adventure of your senses. 😘😜🤪👍

One of a kind market that highlights the community and commerce of Mexico City. We booked a market tour through Eat Mexico and it was the highlight of our time in Mexico. La Merced is massive and filled with tight walkways—without a local guide we would have been totally overwhelmed and lost. Thankfully our guide took us to a dozen food stands and vendors where we could sample everything from tacos to tamales to moles and more.

This market is so so so crowded. It is crazy navigating through this place. Because of that, we only try food at one stall. We eat pancita, basically a tripe soup. Not sure how it is different from menudo. But this soup is a little spicy, a little bland, and you eat with tortilla, salsa, and cream. I wouldn't recommend coming here just because of how crowded this place is and you can find the food here anywhere else.

A great way to understand a city and its people is to visit the marketplace where they shop. Merced is open to all and business owners large and small buy everything from proteins, produce, equipment and decorations here alongside local individuals. This is a very busy, congested location and tourists should hire a local guide to navigate and sample the many vendors and displays.
