Museo del Axolote — Attraction in Mexico City

I like doing things that are not mainstream and super touristy. So when I found this place I thought it was perfect. And it was! I learned a lot about the Axolote, and how important it is to the ecosystem here in Mexico. Unlike other museums in the center of the city, this place actually has parking! You can also catch the bus and it lets you off right near the place.

The tour guides were very knowledgeable and bilingual and explained everything. They also have an aquarium where you can see a variety of different Axolote. There’s even an art gallery, a gift shop and a concession stand. Kids love it!

What really surprised me was the place is privately owned! The owner is a wonderful person, Pamela, who upon learning about the Axolote, became very passionate about them and started the museum and built it up herself! Very impressive to me. There's also some cool hiking trails nearby where you can get some great views of the city. This one is definitely...

Una decepción...

Empezare contando lo que puedes encontrar tal cual en el " museo ". Para después dar mi opinión acerca de lo que le faltaría para que fuera un museo...

-- costo: 50 por persona, no se aceptan vales ni nada.

-- para subir, si no es en coche, mejor no lo intentes, es subir hasta la cima... por caminos de tierra... y sin señalamientos... la entrada es por una caseta que creo es de pinturas... no recuerdo.

--En el primer domo ( izquierda a derecha ) solo encontrarás no más de 40 esculturas pequeñas de axolote... incluyendo algunas máscaras con las que te podrás tomar fotos. De igual manera hay una pantalla pequeña en donde se presentará un video de unos 8 min de duración, el cual habla sobre el mal estado de su habitad... y nada más...

-- en el segundo domo, encontrarás unas 10 peceras donde hay algunos ejemplares de ambystoma mexicanum. Aquí también encontrarás una pequeña tabla donde hay una imagen que muestra algunos de los fenotipos del ambystoma mexicanum... ah y también encontrarás muchos dibujos hechos por la gente que fue al " museo ". ( igual puedes hacer y dejar uno )...

-- en el tercer domo solo hay tipica mercancía, playeras, vasos, libretas, pins, la pequeña escultura del axolote para que tu tambien la decores...

Se me hace una lastima que se perdió la oportunidad de haber hecho un buen museo acerca de nuestro querido ambystoma mexicanum...

Todo el recorrido te van explicando de una manera en la que se siente que no les pagan lo suficiente a los guías...

Me hubiese gustado que incluyeran más contenido como:

generalidades del ambystoma. distribucion de la especie. fenotipos de este. anatomía. como es su regeneración. la decadencia de su habitad. cuidados básicos para mantenerlos en cautiverio. ( ya que con su popularidad siento que es importante aclarar que no es un juguete del momento, que requiere cuidados específicos ). como esto mismo es lo que lo está ayudando a preservar la especie. arte y referencias a este animal en el mundo actual, videojuegos pinturas o lo más popular del momento, el famoso billete. mercancía

Creo seria lo mínimo para poder considerar un buen museo, y no solo tener ejemplares ahí solo por que si...

Una lastima lo que hicieron, buena idea tal vez... muy...

This is a tiny location. Another review mentioned that it was next to a tire place. I didn't see that, but that was very helpful. Be sure to check the location. The Maps shows the entry too soon, which means walking on the street. Not a far walk but easily avoided. It's past a gate that looks like it's to a gated business site or community. Just them know you are visiting the museum, and they'll point you in the right direction. The guided tour doesn't take too long, and you can walk around after and take pictures or color or buy cute Axolote merchandise in the gift shop. All the staff is very kind and our guide was patient enough to say everything in English for my son. There is a small cafeteria where you can buy food and...
