Myself and two children went to explore the fort. We paid the entry fee which would have been a good deal if the place was maintained properly. The garden was full of smashed glass, plastic bottles, plastic bags, cut offs of traditional African fabric. The youngest one went to sit on a bench for a photo and stepped on a pin that went through her sandle and into her foot. Luckily she had her tetanus. Also all the spaces inside the fort walls had been locked off. Apart from that it was quite interesting. I do recommend going but not untill it is sorted. It would only take 1 hour to clean the place up but no-one seems to be interested. We got our money back and an apology was made.

Quick visit to the fortress. It is indeed not big, but hardly costs anything (50 Mt pp)... so why not visit and support its maintenance. Interesting display of Mozambique's history through puppet displays/ maquettes. Of course you must not miss the old Portuguese Fortress of Maputo. It is actually quite small and can be covered in less than an hour. They've got some pretty old cannons here which are neat to look at. Not exactly the funnest part of town to visit or park in, but you've got to do it at least once! There's some really interesting and informative exhibits explaining the formation of Maputo city over the last 500 years

Stone fortress from the colonial period, with artillery pieces and displays explaining the history of the country from pre-colonial to today. Self-guided with some descriptions only in Portuguese and some in English as well (Google translate on my phone worked well). On display is the coffin in which the remains of Ngungunyane, king of the Empire of Gaza and leader of 19th century resistance against colonialization, were repatriated from Portugal. Entrance fee was 100 MZN for foreigners, 50 for citizens, and 25 for students.

....These were very nostalgic moments for us to be walking down the streets of Downtown Maputo after an absence of 24 years! Also what was very satisfactory was the fact that we were on a Guided Walking Tour! The Fortaleza is very well kept, clean and very tidy, everything was explained to us which made it very pleasant and interesting to hear and see some of the Statues that are still preserved which by right makes up the history of this country despite the past and deserves a rightful place in the Museums of Maputo(Mozambique) Its sad to see that not very much has change with regard to the modernization of the once beautiful and sort after city and yet it is true that there are a few modern new buildings coming up! Progress seems to be far too slow! One Very disappointing Fact is that in Most Public Places you are still restricted from taking Photo especially in the Market Places and Some Buildings!! Nevertheless Maputo remains a Beautiful Historic Country that Must be visited by all who...

Visitas guiadas (marcação prévia);

Consultas no Centro de Recursos e de Interpretação;

Programas...

This place brought memories of colonial relics and experiences in Africa. It definitely compares to the experiences I had in Cape Coast, Accra and Kumasi in Ghana about how the Europeans lived in Africa, how they took fortresses and controlled their turf. Its one of the places I'll recommend to any person of black ancestry. Other places include the Cape Coast and Elmina and Accra castles and forts in Ghana and Kumasi. Interestingly, lots of the artifacts, weapons, etc, that were used by the colonialists have been preserved in these places. In fact, in Ghana, you get to experience the slave routes and relive the slave trade experience till the Point of No Return. The stench, ambience, and structures have l been preserved for...
