Ghanta Ghar: Identity of Birgunj Ghanta Ghar, situated in the middle of Birgunj, has turned into a structure that identifies the city. The Ghanta Ghar was built in 1976 with an active participation from the then zonal commissioner Lakshya Bahadur Gurung and the locals. It was the time of the Panchayat System and the Nagar Panchayat, where board members of the Nagar Panchayat made a decision to give the space, where Ghantaghar currently situated, to a businessman for the development of a petrol pump. Few of the board members of the Nagar Panchayat and the then deputy mayor Gopal Prasad Adhikari were against the decision. They put up a fence around the free space at night and placed a plank denoting it as ‘Mahendra Park’. “Since the space had been dubbed with the name of the King’s father, the businessman did not have the courage to use the land,” the then Deputy Mayor’s, 70-year-old wife Anima Adhikari recalled,” Ghantaghar was established three years after this.”

Birgunj, located at the Nepal-India border, is a vital customs area that significantly contributes to Nepal's trade and commerce. It serves as a principal gateway for imports into Nepal, managing a vast array of goods that are essential for the country’s market. The city's strategic positioning and substantial infrastructure underscore its importance as a key economic link between Nepal and India. Over the years, Birgunj has seen the establishment of numerous hotels, hospitals, schools, and parks. However, these amenities often suffer from poor management. Historically, the city has struggled with issues such as cleanliness, traffic congestion, and general disorganization. Despite these persistent challenges, Birgunj has made notable strides in recent years, gradually overcoming some of these obstacles. One significant area that still needs improvement is the availability of convenient and luxurious transportation options. The lack of such services limits the city’s full potential. As Birgunj continues to evolve, there is optimism that these gaps will be filled, enhancing its appeal and functionality. The city holds substantial promise as a bustling commercial center. Continued efforts to improve infrastructure and management practices will likely bolster Birgunj’s status as an essential hub in Nepal’s economic framework. It will be interesting to see how the city progresses on its journey of development and modernization.

More than just a time-telling device, it serves as a central symbol of the city's identity and its rich history. The Ghanta Ghar was constructed in 1976 with remarkable collaboration and community effort. Notably, Japanese schoolchildren from Yogano, Japan, played a crucial role by raising funds for its construction and even donating a Japanese-branded Seiko clock-face. This unique international cooperation highlights the tower's origins and the global connections forged in its making. Architecturally, the Birgunj Ghanta Ghar showcases a blend of traditional Nepali and colonial influences, making it an aesthetically pleasing structure that stands tall amidst the bustling city. Its intricate design and well-preserved features attract both locals and tourists, serving as a popular backdrop for photographs and a gathering place for the community.
