Lumbini lies in the foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal. The site is a large garden with a grove of pipal trees. The area around Lumbini is entirely Hindu, but many Buddhist temples and shrines from various nations are scattered around the holy site itself.

The most important temple at Lumbini is the Maya Devi Temple, which enshrines the traditional site of the Buddha's birth. The current temple stands on the site of earlier temples and stupas, including the stupa built by Ashoka.

The modern temple consists mainly of simple white building that protects ancient ruins, with the exact spot of the Buddha's birth identified. The delicate sandstone sculptures discovered here are now in the National Musuem in Kathmandu.

Atop the temple is a small square tower of the type seen in Kathmandu, with Buddha eyes on each side and a golden pinnacle on top.

On the south side of the temple is a sacred pool (see top photo), where it is said Maya Devi bathed before giving birth, and where the newborn Buddha was washed by two dragons.

The Maha Devi temple is surrounded by the brick foundations of ancient temples and monasteries. All around Lumbini, long lines of colorful prayer flags are strung between trees. They carry prayers and mantras heavenward as they flap on the breeze.

The other main sight of interest at Lumbini is Ashoka's Pillar, near the temple. It is protected by a small fence, which is decorated with prayer flags and banners from the faithful. Around the courtyard containing the pillar are bowls for incense sticks, and there is room to sit in front of the pillar for...

Lumbini is a very peaceful and spiritual place. Being at the birthplace of Lord Buddha felt truly special and emotional. As soon as I entered the area, I felt calm and connected to the peaceful surroundings. The entire place is clean, green, and quiet—perfect for anyone who wants to relax, reflect, or just escape from the noise of daily life.

The Maya Devi Temple is the heart of Lumbini, and standing near the exact spot where Buddha was born gives you a unique feeling of peace and gratitude. The vibe is calm and sacred.

I really enjoyed walking around the monastic zone. Monasteries built by different countries like Thailand, Myanmar, Germany, and others are beautiful and full of unique architecture and culture. Each one has its own peaceful atmosphere. I recommend renting a cycle—it’s the best way to explore the whole area comfortably.

The locals are kind and helpful, and there are plenty of places to sit, rest, or meditate. The World Peace Pagoda and the Eternal Flame are also worth visiting.

Overall, Lumbini is not just a destination—it’s an experience. If you’re searching for peace or spiritual energy, this place is a must-visit. I would definitely love to...

Excellent The birth place of Lord buddha, Lumbini can be a pleasant destination for holy as well as other tourists. The place is not only important for its historic reason but also for monasteries built by different countries to present their art and architecture. The crowd can sometimes disturb you but everybody can enjoy the place at their best. Perhaps I had my expectations too high, but i was underwhelmed by Lumbini. Most monasteries are very nice and offer good photo opps. What really got to me was the lack of religious activity, perhaps one might have chosen the wrong time to visit. I highly suggest hiring a bike to tour the sight, it gives the experience a highly enjoyable dimension (around NPR 150).Lumbini is a must to visit one time in life. It is Buddha's birthplace. Maya Devi Temple is set in the middle of the park known as the Lumbini Development Zone. Works are still in progress but there many beautiful monasteries, temples, stupas built by Buddhist communities from around the world. It's worth a...

Lumbini, revered as the birthplace of Buddha, offers a spiritual journey coupled with practical considerations. Accessible by car, visitors must obtain tickets, priced at Rs. 400, for entry. A noteworthy stop is the Maya Devi Temple, where a display of citizenship cards is required, particularly for residents of Rupandehi, Kapilvastu, and Susta who enjoy free entry. Others are obliged to purchase tickets for approximately Rs. 20. Beyond its historical significance, Lumbini's embrace of cultural diversity and careful entry protocols ensures a serene pilgrimage experience, blending ancient spirituality with contemporary accessibility measures.

Birthplace of Buddha. One must visit here once in their life time. I visited here for a short time but got influenced by it a lot. It is open from early morning to late night. It is open for everybody. You don't need to take any transportation from Gate to reach there as it is just 5 min walk. To visit whole area you need to separate time around 3 hour and need to take transportation.

A really nice overview about buddhism in Nepal and all over the world, definetly worth the small amount of 50 rupees as an entrance fee! I think they could definetly ask for a little more to put the extra earnings into keeping some of the exponats in better shape :) Also it's a little confusing that you gotta buy the tickets 200 m away from the entrance
