Just a note to other visitors: please can you behave in a respectful manner? The collection consists of (pieces of) dead people, often dead babies. I don't know why this apparently is funny to some people, but snickering, giggling, and laughing is inappropriate in every museum and especially so when the museum is filled with dead people. You wouldn't start laughing at a cemetery when you notice the grave of a newborn, right? So why not give the same respect to the dead people making up this museum collection? These people were someone's child, sibling, and sometimes someone's father or mother too.
The Vrolik museum is great! Very interesting collection and with information boards in Dutch and English at a level understandable to a lay person. They also have an area for reading and a small museum shop. Friendly staff, and the museum is easily accessible with public transport. Good value for money. Highly recommended to people interested in anatomy who can behave in a respectful manner. If you are looking for a fun day out having bants with your mates, this isn't the museum for you and you're better off looking for something to do in Amsterdam city centre.
The only thing I think could be a nice addition is a screen showing a schematic representation of embryonic development. No audio but with on-screen text in Dutch...
Read moreIncredibly interesting array of subjects and specimens. The entrance is free as it is within the university it is run by. There is no entrance fee, however, they do ask that a small donation is made which we did as there are so many unbelievable specimens. They are all laid out in a logical manner of being in different stages of growth, development or by body part. This is not for the faint hearted but for anyone with a interest or career in human anatomy or biology this is worth the train ride to the south of Amsterdam and the ten minute walk from the station.
My partner works as a midwife and found everything amazing, something that she had never seen before. There must have been great skill to remove the foetuses in the near perfect state they were in. There is also quite a few animal exhibits too, meaning that a veterinarian or zoologist would definitely find some benefit here.
The museum is not well sign-posted outside the building, but once inside it is a left from the door pointing towards the route from the station. The signs inside are hard to miss and if not, I'm sure anyone inside would be happy to...

Amazing collection of real life human and animal specimens. You can see human embryos, different types of twins (Siamese, thoracopagus, omphalothoracopagus), the lion-pet of Napoleon Bonaparte's brother, the bezoars stones mentioned in Harry potter books and livers deadly marked by the corset fashion. A kinda of creepy atmosphere BUT definitely a memorable experience. I congrat the Vrolik family , you have my respects. Also Mia the volunteer in the entrance was a living breathing encyclopedia, I absolutely adored her. Cute spot for reading in the back, total Harry potter - medieval vibes .
10/10 experience 💀💀☠️☠️
PS : I really wish they will add an audio guide of the museum in the future. Nevertheless, the black cards explain all the samples, which of course...
