I just couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this amazing basilica the first time. Basiliek van de H.H. Agatha en Barbara was built between 1842 and 1884. Its nave and interior were modeled after St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican, while the facade is a replica of the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome. Both St. Peter's Basilica and Basilica of St. John Lateran are Major Basilicas! (There are 4 in total).

Elements inspired by their counterparts in Rome include Michelangelo's Pietà, Bernini's baldachin, the Chair of Saint Peter, and Bernini's Gloria. (From wiki)

The basilica was designed by architect Pierre Cuypers, who is also the architect for Dutch Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam...

Visited this replica of the St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome during a guided tour. There is a lot to say about the details and history of this cathedral, but nothing that can't be find via Wikipedia.

Some remarkable facts are the specific painting technique to make the walls look like marble. This technique has also been used in the St. Peter in Rome above a certain height.

In the next couple of years a bigger area around the church which includes several historical buildings will be restored for 23M EUR. Definitely worth to explore more than just...

Slechtste ervaring in mijn leven. Afgelopen zomer hier getrouwd.
