Memory Museum — Attraction in Hellendoorn

A truly impressive and moving World War II museum! The Memory Museum is beautifully designed with realistic scenes, immersive displays, and lots of informative panels that really bring history to life. Most of the information is in Dutch, but right at the entrance you can pick up translated guide booklets – we got one in German, which was super helpful.

You can really tell that the staff know their history – they’re passionate, knowledgeable, and it shows in the way the museum is curated. I learned so many things I didn’t know before!

The only small downside: not everything was translated in the guidebook, but hey – we are in the Netherlands after all. Still, an absolutely worthwhile visit for anyone interested in...

I must say I was quite surprised by the fact that how amazing this place is, I wasn't sure at first but this was the best World War 2 museum I visited during my stay in the Netherlands! I even more enjoyed it then the Airborne Museum and I can say they had the best weapon collection, the most amazing display of armaments and the restored life like scenes and information that they displayed in Dutch (sadly not all in English) but it was still very nice. Imposante tentoonstelling in het Vrijheidsmuseum Memory over het verloop van WOII in Nederland, ook vanuit Duits perspectief. De aanloop, ellende, bevrijding en de holocaust krijgen veel aandacht, met een prominente plek voor Anne Frank. Indië wordt kort belicht. De tentoonstelling geeft gezichten aan in de regio gesneuvelde geallieerde soldaten en richt zich ook op de betekenis van WOII voor Overijssel, met aandacht voor de V-1 en V-2 raketopstelplaatsen bij Nijverdal. Op de bovenverdieping is een tentoonstelling over verschillende V-bommen en raketwapens. Originele beelden en interviews op tv-schermen versterken de impact. Vrijwilligers zorgen voor een gastvrije ontvangst, houden het museum draaiende en verzorgen rondleidingen. Voor kinderen zijn er geen interactieve elementen, maar de diorama's en oorlogstaferelen bieden een realistisch beeld. De horeca is netjes geprijsd en biedt lekkere appeltaart. Toegankelijkheid: De lift biedt toegang tot de V-bommen tentoonstelling, maar de trapliften zijn enkel geschikt voor lichte rolstoelen (die evt. te leen zijn). Er is een redelijk groot invalidentoilet beneden; boven is dit toilet alleen voor personeel toegankelijk.
