Even though my star rating says I dislike Skateland I must also say, there isn't another in door skate park in Rotterdam.
The mini ramp and park course are excellent set ups. The mini ramp allows for a lot of variation so you are not limited by its construction. The same is true about the park course.
Having said that there are a number of limiting factors at Skateland.
First and foremost is Skateland has an open door policy for all 'wheel' sports. Unlike other skateparks in the Netherlands which will exclude all but skateboards or bmx'ers Skateland allows for everyone. This means that the exceptional mini and park are overcrowded with steppers (scooters). These steppers come in vast hordes many of whom are not that interested in stepping at all, and many of them not capable of riding a step on flat ground much less on a mini ramp or in the park. The inexperience of this crowd makes for a maddening situation; as well as a dangerous one. Most of the steppers have no concept of looking to see if someone else is on the mini, most do not wait for a turn, and frequently they do not clear the way for the next rider, but stand on the flat or in the channel day dreaming. Many times I've seen and also myself have had head on collisions with these riders.
The other issue with Skateland is, the mini it is an extremely slippery surface. It can range from slippery to super slippery to the point where I've seen skate sessions just come to a halt because the mini is too slippery. The number one theory for this is wax. Even though forbidden, rollerbladers wax the coping, the debris from the wax then falls onto the ramp. Then the ramp becomes slippery. To support this theory, when you are done skating on the mini your wheels should have a healthy coating of black gunk. Another theory has to do with the type of wood that was used to build the mini. And yet another is that the ramp is never properly cleaned (I do not know what properly means). Also the weather has been blamed.
These issues define my rating, and if the chance arises to skate at another park I'll always take...
Read moreAbsolute wild skatepark experience. You walk in and the staff is very warm welcoming like over never seen in my 25 years of skating. I started skating in the park on the front side for 20 min and then went downstairs to see if it was a bathroom and the other side was another skatepark.. Absolutely mind blown by this place. Very clean, friendly, good sets. Perfect for beginners and advance skaters! Everyone is welcome and it’s not to far from the city! Definitely recommend coming to skate here if you’re near rotterdam! enjoy and i’ll be back. one love, this...
