Nice museum which displays a lot of history about fishing and sailing around the island of Texel. In the main building, which is already worth a visit just for its architecture, the historic and archaeological collections are shown. This includes a display of recovered items from Dutch Golden Age (17th century) VOC shipwrecks, which is quite impressive but unfortunately lacks context and explanation. The basement, however, contains a very nice collection of models of 17th century ships, laid out in an interactive seascape, telling stories about daily life on board the ships. The area behind the museum contains a collection of recreated buildings (a fisherman's house, a smithee, etc) showing how people on Texel used to live. Also, there is display explaining the more modern aspects of the relationship between Texel, the North Sea and the local ships, including an explanation of the construction and updates of the dikes around the island and an interactive ferry simulator. All in all, if you're visiting Texel, this museum is quite worth an afternoon...
