That was my first visit with my family there. No entrance fees. The multifunctional building has a modern design (with the contour of the fort) and is also very family friendly (WCs can be found on upper and lower floors). We watched a movie about the extraction of the remains of an ancient ship in the Roman times. Very impressed how all the ancient pieces were preserved, restored, and displayed for the public.
Outside of the building, a bathhouse was excavated. We walked through an exhibition area about the human life and history in that area. Then we also found an educational area for groups and school classes, as well as a neat, well maintained area for animals. First we saw so many multi-colored small birds, then proceeded to another room where pigs, big furry rabbits, caveats, and mouses were kept. There were no goats and some empty lots. Children can walk in to pet those lovely big fluffy rabbits.
There's a restaurant right next to the ship display area, and provides indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor open area (with big huge green lawn area) is so lovely, and spacious for holding public events. Highly recommended for a...
Read moreIt's a small, but very nice place. The Castellum contains a little museum, a little farm, a theater, a cafe and some fields and gardens. The museum gives an interesting view of the area's history from prehistoric times until now, with a focus on Roman times. You can enter for free and the staff can offer extra information. The cafe offers a good selection of great food with good service. The staff is friendly and service is quick. We didn't check the theater. The farm consists of some small and some big farm animals. The bigger ones weren't there at our visit. As for the smaller ones, they have several animals including rabbits and guinea pigs that you can pet. All in all a good place for an afternoon. And it's a great place to bring...
Read moreCastellum Hoge Woerd is one of our most favourite places in all of Utrecht. When excavating the area to build up a residential area surrounding the now- existing Castle, the Dutch government uncovered ancient ruins from the Roman Empire. Many of these artifacts are housed within the main building of the Castellum. The Castellum Cafe, housed inside the castle offers a fresh, lovely menu and excellent drink selections. The space is light and bright by day, and candlelit at night. The staff throughout the dacility are kind, helpful and especially knowledgeable. When in Utrecht, take a side trip to the Castellum....
