Looking to take in the entire city without dealing with the traffic; then visit the Christchurch Gondola. It doesn't take long to get a ticket and find yourself climbing the hill to the top. The ride was fairly smooth and occasionally you will yourself stopped on the way up or down but it is only temporary and a good opportunity to get in some panoramic shots. Once up the top of the station there is a gift shop you have to traverse going in and out while trying to avoid any trinkets or memorabilia. The range is diverse - I got through the jungle of items with New Zealand printed on it by holding to the philosophy of go away and if it still feels like a good idea in 5 minutes come back and spend big. The cafe and station with viewing balcony is very scenic. I nice place to sit back and look at the two sides in relative peace and warmth with a coffee. For a bit more of a slap on the face New Zealand feeling you can walk out of the station and across some uneven paths (not suited for those with mobility issues) of the mountain and take in the views. When I arrived it was a little overcast and the vista was a little restricted but I waited a little on the rocky seat and more and more of the city and beaches were revealed.

We spent a morning here, riding the gondola, enjoying the views from the observation deck, and having a quick lunch. There was a little ride you could do called Journey Through Time, telling a little of the history of Christchurch and Banks Peninsula. While it was interesting, we felt that the presentation did not discuss much of the Maori history, instead dwelling more significantly on the history of the European settlers who came 900-odd years later. It would have been nice to see a little more of the Maori history. There was also not adequately signed access for people with disabilities, and a lot of stairs in the absence of an elevator (if there was an elevator, we did not discover it). Other than these two things, it was a really great way to spend the morning and the views from the top are phenomenal. It's definitely worth a visit.

Love to visit Gondola Chch whenever we are free. We got the a annual pass last year. I believe that it’s worth. We love to enjoy the scenic 360 view around the Chch. In different seasons and according to the time you are going on to the top you can have a different experience with the nature. I love the strong wind up in there. If you have time use the Gondola one way and use your foot for other way. Don’t forget to visit the TIME MACHINE that tells the story about Chch history. My children enjoyed glowing their white dresses inside Time machine. Don’t be afraid if the Gondola stopped on the way. That’s for the loading and unloading purposes. Have a hot coffee at the cafe and you may buy anything from the shop to help local businesses. Take lots of photos that are unforgettable. Enjoy your next trip to Chch Gondola.

A bit far from the central business district but accessible on the bus network (30 minutes or so, depending on traffic), the Christchurch Gondola is a cable car that climbs Mount Cavendish. From the top (445 meters / 1460 feet), you can see the Christchurch skyline as well as down into Lyttelton Harbor. If your weather is mostly clear, don't miss this. If it's cloudy, I would suggest waiting it out. A gift shop and restaurant at the top has meals, snacks and ice cream. They are strict about last call at 5:00 pm and if you're taking the bus, note that the bus might not come into the parking lot after 5:00 pm so you need to go to the stop on the street.

Really great way to see Christchurch and the surrounding Canterbury Plains. The gondola is accessible right off the bus route and takes about 5 min to ride to the peak. There’s a small cafe and gift shop at the top, along with a variety of short trails to see the stunning panoramic views in all directions (watch out for the sheep droppings!). 🐑🚠⛰️ Docking one star bc I felt that the price for the cable car was a little too high. Also—and this isn’t necessarily the fault of the gondola, but something to keep in mind—the cafe on top was a little disappointing with limited food options. Might be a good idea to bring your own snacks.

About 30 to 45 minutes drive from airport depending on traffic. I caught Uber. Noticed few Metro bus stopping here. If you are adventurous and not scared of heights (or look in the opposite direction but not down, hehe). Not too long to wait for the ride. Going from down hill to uphill and vice versa is about 10 minutes each way. Nice views. Felt sorry for the sheeps on display on the hill, they were trying to take shelter under the rocks as it was windy cold. Personal suggestion: book 1 night's accommodation in this area so you can explore more hill tracks and the nice beach side. ( I was video recording didn't take good photos)
