Eksdale reserve is located between Glenfield and Birkdale suburbs in the North Shore region of greater Auckland. I would say this reserve is the pair of lungs of Glenfield and Birkdale, as the lush green patch right in the centre of this suburban precinct cleaning emissions of the surrounding area. The reserve extends to about 74ha and is one of the most unique urban eco systems in the Auckland ecological landscape. It also has connections to the few remaining salt water mixed swamps in Auckland. There are multiple walking tracks in this reserve which you can access from a couple of points on Glenfield Rd, Eksdale Rd, Lauderdale Rd, Beach Haven Rd, Seaview Rd, Brunton place etc., where street parking is widely available. These easy, shady bush walking tracks are perfectly suitable for anyone, particularly on sweltering summer days. In the winter, parts of the tracks get muddy, but most parts are gravel laid and well maintained so it is not as bad. Mountain biking and dogs on leash allowed. This native bush thrives with nikau palms, young kauri trees and ponga tree ferns and the Kaipatiki Stream runs along this reserve. In the spring or after a rain, you can see a little waterfall if you access the reserve from Eksdale side.

Really nice walk. My only complaint would be the lack of signage considering there are a lot of diverging paths. I had to keep checking this screenshot I took of the Auckland Council Kauri Dieback map, but it's not a big deal. Oh and those little "doors" left by children need some quality control because a lot of them just look like painted trash.

There are several entrances to Eskdale Reserve, but they may be closed due to maintenance. Better check in advance. Some parts may also be placed under rāhui (a cultural ban on human entry) in a race against time to save the trees from kauri dieback. Good for leisure walking or jogging.

What was once a real trail with a feeling of nature has now become a cement & stones footpath. Where before you encountered many birds now you find people emptying their dogs, but don't worry they package the poo in colorful plastic bags and leave them around if you require a take away after you enjoyed finding them on the path. All in the love of NATURE. A shame for there are many volunteers doing a great work clearing the invasive species and freeing the ground amongst the trees. This great work is then nulled by the new breed of nature lovers with their latte and untrained dogs, left to wander everywhere in spite of the fact that a reserve should be a place reserved for the local wildlife...

A very nice large bush reserve in the middle of dense residential area. Once we step in, we forget that we are living in a suburban area. It is so huge and wonderful. There are a lot of walks in the reserve and one can easily spend from an hour to almost a day. Car parks are available on side of glenfield road or domain road. Track are well maintained, though can be muddy and slippery in wet weather. Highly recommended for an easy break from the hustle and bustle...
