Lovey visitor center with very informative displays about volcanos, local ski history, and the flora and fauna in the park. Center also had great maps for local hikes, clean bathroom facilities, and friendly staff to answer your questions. Do note during Covid Level 2 you must reserve parking north of the Chateau for stays longer than 60minutes. You can call ahead or obtain a free pass in the visitor center. Parking south of the chateau does not require a pass and is good for 180 minutes, plenty of time to hike Taranaki Falls.

You should plan to stop in here before heading to do any of the tracks in the Tongariro National Park area. From getting the latest weather updates, to hut passes, to getting a little souvenir, this Information centre has it all. There also an interpretive area with many displays about the volcanic eruptions, wildlife in the area, and history of the Park. Be sure to set aside at least half an hour for your visit. Toilets are located right across the road, and many walks start nearby.

The Staff at the centre are amazing! They gave solid advice for the northern circuit treck, after a days hiking in torrential rain & cold gale winds from waihohonu hut they gave me warmth & a place to change from my soggy mess. It was needed and appreciated, please don’t underestimate the weather. Seek advice. The centre is awesome, super informative with a lovely shop to buy some bits you may have forgot. Bravo 🙌 😘

Mount Ruapehu and its Whakapapa ski field have always been one of my favorite destinations in New Zealand. Whether visiting in winter for skiing and snowboarding or in the warmer months for hiking and stunning views, Whakapapa offers a truly unique experience.

During the winter season, the Whakapapa ski field becomes a bustling hub for snow enthusiasts. The variety of runs caters to all skill levels, from beginners learning the ropes to seasoned skiers and snowboarders seeking more challenging terrain. The snow conditions are generally excellent, and there’s a great range of facilities to make your visit comfortable, including rental shops, cafes, and ski schools. The views from the top are absolutely spectacular—on a clear day, you can see across the Central Plateau and beyond to the Tongariro National Park.

One of the most memorable aspects of Whakapapa is the wide variety of activities available, whether you’re on the slopes or not. I’ve always appreciated how there’s something for everyone, from snow tubing and tobogganing for families to scenic chairlift rides that offer incredible views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The feeling of being surrounded by snow-capped peaks and volcanic landscapes is truly magical.

In the summer months, Mount Ruapehu and the Whakapapa area transform. The snow melts, revealing a playground for hikers. The famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a world-renowned trek, is easily accessible from the area, and I found the scenery during my hike to be nothing short of breathtaking. The lush vegetation, volcanic craters, and clear blue skies make for a memorable adventure.

Whether you’re visiting for winter sports or summer exploration, Mount Ruapehu and Whakapapa offer an unforgettable experience with stunning landscapes, outdoor adventure, and a real connection to New Zealand’s unique...

I do not recommend this visitor center. I talked with two agents and had define question - what is the best activity to do in this weather if I want to hike up to 3 hours. Both said - take gondola up. And showed me the camera. Then I asked what should I hike - one didn’t recommend me anything - I have asked like 3 times about the recommendation, and she just showed me the map and descriptions on the wall and said to read them. Then I tried the other person on the counter, she suggested take gondola as it’s sunny there, and two hikes for this weather from the list on the wall. Then I drove to the gondola and took it up - 49$, and learned that to get the views I need to hike 2.4 kilometers up. I didn’t even put my hiking boots or had water. And it’s loose gravel so sneakers are simply dangerous. And ticket valid for 1 ride. Awesome. I am highly disappointed. I have been to a lot of visitors centers and never had any issues - always got the best experience and highly...
