🌊 Rakaia Salmon Statue – A Charming Stop on the Canterbury Route 🐟

During my road trip through Canterbury, I made a quick stop at the iconic Rakaia Salmon Statue—and I’m glad I did! The statue is massive and impossible to miss. At 12 meters tall, it really captures the essence of the town’s pride in its salmon fishing heritage. It’s quirky, fun, and makes for a great photo opportunity, especially if you’re into unusual roadside attractions.

There’s convenient parking right next to the statue, clean public toilets, and even a cozy little café—Salmon Tales Café—where I grabbed a coffee and a salmon pie (which was surprisingly good!). The small park nearby with a playground also makes it a perfect spot to stretch your legs if you’re traveling with family.

Sure, it’s not a major tourist attraction, but that’s part of its charm. It’s very “New Zealand”—laid-back, proud of local history, and surrounded by...

Statue is one of those iconic symbols of the area, and well placed. However, worth more than a mention is Rakaia now offers "the" BEST toilet stop here enroute to/from Chch! The NEW loos are a great set up: very clean individual stalls, plenty available, with both wheelchair accessible and family room (with change table) options. COVID scanning everywhere. Excellent porch-like weather protection overhang between loos and hand wash area, complete with beautiful long composite stone trough (shared) sink and Dyson hand dryers. Sure beats the old, cold decaying relic that used to be there! Also note: just along to South of loos đŸš» near playground are two old gaols (jail cells) and an historical review of yesteryear report of how the river...

Great place for a short break and to play. Here you can see the cultural and historical features of the region. There is a special salmon sculpture, which can be seen from a distance. Children can find special fun. An orange tractor head, so cool! It's classic and new, well maintained. Looks like the people here took good care of it and loved it. There is also a cafe, but we haven't experienced it yet. Our family and friends made great...

I've always loved seeing the Salmon when passing through ever since I was younger. My brother and I stopped yesterday on our way home and I loved seeing it lit up at night. Although I hope they can fix it up a bit in some spaces (such as near end of tail) as looked a bit worn. Other than that it's always a good spot to rest your legs, use the restroom nearby or the Salmon Tails Cafe next door to it.

This is not just a big fish... But it is an awesome place to stop on your travels, play in the unique playground, or stop at the tidy upgraded toilets. There is a cafe nearby and you can feed the fish. There's a little gift shop around the corner as well, and the lady there who told my kids lots of cool facts about fish! As if my kids didn't just love stopping at a big fish â˜ș
