đ Rakaia Salmon Statue â A Charming Stop on the Canterbury Route đ
During my road trip through Canterbury, I made a quick stop at the iconic Rakaia Salmon Statueâand Iâm glad I did! The statue is massive and impossible to miss. At 12 meters tall, it really captures the essence of the townâs pride in its salmon fishing heritage. Itâs quirky, fun, and makes for a great photo opportunity, especially if youâre into unusual roadside attractions.
Thereâs convenient parking right next to the statue, clean public toilets, and even a cozy little cafĂ©âSalmon Tales CafĂ©âwhere I grabbed a coffee and a salmon pie (which was surprisingly good!). The small park nearby with a playground also makes it a perfect spot to stretch your legs if youâre traveling with family.

The NEW loos are a great set up: very clean individual stalls, plenty available, with both wheelchair accessible and family room (with change table) options. COVID scanning everywhere. Excellent porch-like weather protection overhang between loos and hand wash area, complete with beautiful long composite stone trough (shared) sink and Dyson hand dryers. Sure beats the old, cold decaying relic that used to be there!    Read moreGreat place for a short break and to play. Here you can see the cultural and historical features of the region. There is a special salmon sculpture, which can be seen from a distance. Children can find special fun. An orange tractor head, so cool! It's classic and new, well maintained. Looks like the people here took good care of it and loved it.
