This track starts at the carpark near the Fernhill roundabout and ends at Sunshine Bay beach, about a 1.5 hour return if you don’t stop and enjoy the beach (pretty hard not to). The walk is almost like a mini Abel Tasman experience, as it stretches along the lake.
Rumour has it that the more adventurous hikers have seen an 8-foot waterfall along this track, which has eluded even DOC staff. We asked a local, and she brought us to an innocuous point that will lead us to the waterfall (I uploaded a photo of this point. It’s about 10-15 min in from one mile carpark, on the left before you go up to the highest point of the track) - you can barely see the path as it literally goes through the tall grass and bushes. I tried to explore it with an acquaintance I met there - we got to a point where we had to sit and scramble down a steep slope. I gave up and turned back at this point, but she continued. I never found out if she found the waterfall. This path is very overgrown and there are sharp branches so please cover up your limbs before you go in.
