AWOL Canyoning Adventures — Attraction in Waitākere Ranges

WOW! Literally blown away by this experience. I had started researching activities and things to do in Auckland months before our trip to NZ and had made a mental note to try canyoning. What I didn't think about was the difference in seasons (the reverse from back home) and that it would still be winter/early spring when we got to Auckland. When we called to schedule, AWOL was more than happy to take us, but we needed a third person (minimum of three people to make the trip happen). We posted fliers around the hostel and found somebody who was willing to give it a go!

Elise (our AMAZING/FEARLESS leader) picked us up and we made our way to Piha. After stopping for some coffee and going through our brief safety training, we headed out on our adventure. As someone who has never repelled, abseiled or been canyoning before, I was a bit nervous, but excited all the same. Important note: No Experience Necessary!

We spent the whole day repelling down waterfalls and cliffs. Take in every moment because the area you are in is absolutely breathtaking. I felt as if we were exploring the Amazon (minus all of the things that could kill you) and had it all to ourselves. Make sure you take some photos. Your guide will have a waterproof camera, but they are taking photos of everyone. If you have a GoPro or a way to take some photos yourself, do so to make the most of those memories. Elise was super kind to take some extra photos of our group (the small group size I'm sure helped). Don't think twice - please check it out for a day like no other. I'll definitely be back on my next trip...

Absolutely incredible experience!!! We have never done abseiling before but have been around the climbing scene and enjoyed ourselves so much. They instruct you through everything you need to know and have alternatives for if you’re too scared for anything. They are so encouraging and helpful and is one of the best guides we’ve ever been on. Adam was our guide and he was such a great human with a heart of gold. Outstanding, we went for Piha Canyoning adventure with Cam as a part of a team event, Simply outstanding, in terms of communication, rescheduling, accommodating our requests, all the required to keep us safe and comfortable, taking every opportunity to make it a fun event for us.
