A compact museum showcasing Norway's whaling industry up to it's height in the 1960s. The museum tells the gory stories of whaling and the lives of the seafarers as is.

It was an educational and interesting walk through with pictures, diorama, flims and memorabilia. Explanatory text is available in English and the stories flowed from one room to the next. The most impressive part of the museum is its taxidermy showcase of nordic animals and whale bones. The interior is dim but lighting adequate. The strong airconditioning kept musty smells away.

We visited in the afternoon during Summer and the place was not crowded. Entry is 100NOK for an adult. Complimentary parking for guests but...

Where else will you see so many remains/skeletons of whales?? Quite impressive and captivating for both adults and children. The skeleton section on the basement is excellent, though a bit small if there happens to be many people. The museum has its own parking, which is a plus. The only downside is that there could have been a bit more info on how the hunting was done. We only spotted a few harpoons and lots of details on how they were processed, but not on the...

Muzeum Wielorybnictwa w Sandefjord to niebywałe miejsce.

bazy wielorybnicze Norwegia miała na całym świecie (nie wiem, dlaczego myślałem o tym zjawisku jako połowach na wodach lokalnych);

wielorybnicy, wypływając na łowy, opuszczali domy aż na 6-7 miesięcy, wracając na miesiące letnie, gdzie czekała ich praca na roli;

częstą praktyką było przebieranie się przez wielorybników w stroje kobiece i wspólne tańczenie załogi podczas różnych świąt;

podróż na wody Antarktydy oznaczała zawijanie do egzotycznych portów, gdzie masowo kupowane były prezenty dla rodzin (bardzo popularne były tzw. "Las Palmas dolls");

norweski wielorybnik: "Nearly every nation was represented at whale catchers and factory sites - during the First World War, Englishmen and Germans worked together without any conflicts";

powszechną praktyką było zatrudnianie do prac fizycznych mieszkańców Afryki - byli oni jednak słabo opłacani i żyli w znacznie...

Amazing ground floor historic exhibition about whaling in which Sandefjørd has an amazing tradition. I was wowed 😲 about how much information was given in such an amazing way combining the exhibition of historical artifacts from whaling expeditions and the discovery of the Antarctic. Plenty of multimedia. It is a must visit 😀
