Shining light into the past is what this marvel of the old world is now doing
Erected on Dias Peak in 1860, this lighthouse was eventually put out of commission as it was not serving its purpose being so high up. It would often get shrouded in clouds which would completely block light getting out to passing ships and thus result in wreckage.
Due to this, the new lighthouse was erected in 1919, closer to the point as much lower down

Read moreAt the very top of Cape Point Peak, 238 metres above sea level, stands this old lighthouse from the 1860s. The iron tower had 16 hollow metal mirrors, and every minute it emitted a twelve-second white flash with an intensity of 2000 candela. A new lighthouse was erected further down to make it easier for ships to navigate in cloudy weather and fog. Many visitors to the Cape Peninsula come here to enjoy the spectacular views of the sea, cliffs and beaches.
Worthwhile sightseeing and attraction. The furnacular or tram that takes you up to the lighthouse was not working though. We rode the shuttle which not quite the same experience
