Stepping through Delhi Gate, one of the iconic entrances to Lahore's Walled City, feels like crossing a threshold into another era. This massive portal, once part of the city's defensive fortifications, now serves as a gateway to a maze of history, culture, and living traditions that define Old Lahore. The narrow, winding streets immediately transport you to a world where centuries-old architecture reaches toward the sky and the air is rich with the aromas of spices, cooking food, and burning incense. The lanes bustle with everyday life – vendors calling out their wares, children playing, and residents going about their daily routines among buildings that have stood for centuries.
Our first stop, the magnificent Wazir Khan Mosque, emerges like a painted dream. Built in 1634 during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, the mosque's facade is an extraordinary canvas of Persian and Mughal artistry. The intricate kashikari (tile work) and fresco paintings cover nearly every surface. The mosque's four minarets stand proud against the sky, while the main prayer hall's walls tell stories through their detailed calligraphy and floral patterns.
Just a short walk from the mosque, we discover Khalifa Naan Shop, a living piece of culinary history that has been serving the citizens of Lahore since 1869. The shop's ancient tandoors (clay ovens) have been producing the same perfectly blistered naan bread for over 150 years. The current owners, descendants of the original Khalifa (master baker), maintain their ancestor's exacting standards. Watching the skilled hands of the naan-bai (bread maker) slap the dough against the tandoor's inner walls, and retrieving it moments later, perfectly cooked, is mesmerizing.
Our final stop is the recently restored Shahi Hammam (Royal Bathhouse), a remarkable example of Persian-style public baths from the Mughal era. Built in 1635 by the same governor who commissioned Wazir Khan Mosque, this hammam is an architectural marvel that offers fascinating insights into the social life of Mughal-era Lahore. Walking through the different chambers – from the warm room to the hot room and the temperate areas – one can almost imagine the bathhouse in its heyday, when it served as both a cleansing facility and a social hub for the...
Read moreThis review is for the Lahore history by night tour that the authority arranges. It's a banger!! Kudos to the guides for doing a superb job. At the current price of PKR2000 per person (USD7 APPX) is superb value for money. Highly recommended. Now that we have the great stuff out of the way, a few suggestions. Access. The access to the venue is a disaster. Maybe make the area a no car zone on the weekends? The location for the start of the tour can be signposted better. This is a simple step to improve the experience. Maybe try smaller groups? It gets difficult to hear the guides. Again it's an easy fix with better instruments. The authority can consider making videos explaining the history around the highlights for the tour better. That will be a big enhancement to...
