We rented a car from Playa Blanca to Panama City. We left pretty early in the morning so it only took us about 2 hours to get there. Coming back was a different story. We hit rush hour and that was quite the trip. Unless you are an aggressive and good driver I suggest that you do not drive in Panama. Me and my partner make a good team driving. He gives me the directions on where to turn, where to go and I am the aggressive driver. I am only really an aggressive driver when I have to be and I had to be. Needless to say we made it back to our hotel at the RIU in Playa Blanca 4 hours later. We were exhausted but in one piece. The road bridge of Americas is a road bridge in Panama, which spans the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal. The Bridge of Americas crosses the Pacific approach to the Panama Canal at Balboa, near Panama City. It was pretty amazing crossing the bridge as we got to see some of the canal. We ended up walking along the walkway. The walkway is called Cinta Costera (Coastal Strip). It's a great way to see some of Panama City and it's buildings. To make a long story short we ended up in the poor district of Panama City. What I saw was so sad. I didn't know this until later but roughly one-third of Panamanians still live in poverty. Despite the country's strong economic growth, poverty remains high in Panama. I took these photos while I was stuck in traffic. I couldn't believe what I saw. It broke my heart when I saw the conditions these children were living in. We tend to complain about the things we don't have and throw away food like it was nothing. It made me think how truly blessed I was.

Been crossing this bridge since forever and the view on both sides never fails to amaze me. If traveling in the direction away from the city, to the left is the view of the Pacific Ocean. To the right you will see ports for shipping containers as well one end of the canal. The rest stop at the end of the bridge on the right side is called Mirador de las Americas, which you should absolutely check out for the amazing view. Kudos if you are lucky enough to see a ship entering or exiting the canal. No, they are not always within view. During low tide, you realize how shallow the bed of the canal really is. A significant portion of the muddy bed is exposed. Then you realize the narrow strip of runway the ships have to use.

I have gone under the bridge twice traversing the canal from west to east or South to North as the case may be. We were told that this bridge, linking the northern and southern American continents joins the two major highways on each continent making it possible to drive from Alaska to Ushuaia. I'm not sure if that's true, but its a great story. Both times I passed under this was at dawn or close to it.

I have gone under the bridge twice traversing the canal from west to east or South to North as the case may be. We were told that this bridge, linking the northern and southern American continents joins the two major highways on each continent making it possible to drive from Alaska to Ushuaia. El puente de las Américas es un puente para vehículos rodadores localizado en Panamá que cruza el canal de Panamá, a la altura de su entrada del Pacífico, y que une la localidades de Balboa (en la ciudad de Panamá) al noreste, y el distrito de Arraiján por el suroeste.

Fue inaugurado el 12 de octubre de 1962,1​ ocupa la misma ubicación que ocupaba el transbordador al cual reemplazó.1​

Las autoridades de Estados Unidos intentaron llamarlo Thatcher Bridge, pero la Asamblea Legislativa de Panamá determinó el nombre de "puente de Las Américas", oficializado mediante resolución del 2 de octubre de 1962, porque, no solo era un puente que unía por vía terrestre la capital de Panamá con el interior del país, sino que es una vía que conecta las masas continentales de América del Norte y América Central con América del Sur, separadas por el Canal de Panamá.

El puente tiene un diseño de arco de modillón, con 1654 m de largo. El peso de la estructura de acero es de 16 975 toneladas. Con una altura en su punto más alto de 117 metros sobre el nivel del mar promedio. La altura libre máxima debajo del tramo principal es de 61,3 m en marea alta. Fue construido entre 1958 y 1962 por los Estados Unidos, con un coste estimado por los Estados Unidos de 20 millones de dólares.

Desde su inauguración en 1962 hasta la apertura del puente Centenario en 2004, el puente de las Américas era el único enlace permanente por carretera entre las porciones Norte y Sur del continente americano, las que fueron escindidas desde el año 1914 por la apertura del canal de Panamá.

Historia Necesidad de un puente

Puente de las Américas, vista nocturna. Desde el comienzo del proyecto francés de construcción de un canal, se pudo apreciar que las ciudades de Colón y Panamá quedarían separadas del resto de la república y del norte del continente, a causa del nuevo canal. Esta cuestión era importante incluso ya durante la construcción del canal, ya que hubo que emplear transporte marítimo para llevar a los trabajadores de un lado a otro.

Tras la apertura del canal, el incremento en el número de automóviles, junto con la construcción de una nueva carretera en dirección a Chiriquí, al oeste de Panamá, aumentaron la necesidad de que hubiese una forma eficiente de cruzar el canal. La División Mecánica del canal de Panamá recondujo esta situación mediante la creación de dos nuevos transbordadores (o ferries): el Presidente Amador y el President Washington.2​ El servicio se expandió en agosto de 1940 con más barcazas, que darían servicio principalmente a militares. Aún se pueden ver vestigios del muelle en la orilla.

El 3 de junio de 1942 se inauguró un puente para ferrocarril, pero no permanente, ya que no podía utilizarse mientras que los barcos estuviesen atravesando el canal. También para suplir las necesidades de tráfico se añadió otro transbordador, el Presidente Porras en diciembre de 1942.2​
