According to locals, Its name, derived from the Cebuano word “hinagdanan” (meaning “laddered”), hints at the serendipitous discovery that led to its enchanting allure. The Discovery: Picture this: a local landowner clearing decaying branches stumbles upon a mysterious hole. Curious, he tosses a stone inside and hears a splash. Armed with a ladder, he descends into the cave, revealing a hidden world beneath the limestone hills. Naturally Lit Beauty: As you step inside, sunlight filters through holes in the ceiling, illuminating the cavern. The limestone formations—stalactites and stalagmites—create a mesmerizing landscape. Birds nest in small holes above, their presence adding to the cave’s magic. The Crystal-Clear Lagoon: At the heart of Hinagdanan Cave lies a deep lagoon. Its waters, crystal-clear and tinged with green from the limestone below, beckon visitors. Once a popular bathing spot, it’s now off-limits due to karst pollutants. But fear not—the view alone is worth the visit.. Navigating the Cave: Be prepared: the cave floor can be slippery. Rubber-soled footwear is essential. Stiff stairs lead deeper into the earth, and the confined space may leave you gasping for fresh air. Yet, the thrill of exploration keeps tourists coming back. Bats and Beyond: Interestingly, Hinagdanan Cave lacks bats—the sunlight streaming in discourages them. Instead, you’ll encounter otherworldly formations and perhaps catch glimpses of the cave’s resident birds.Tourist Guides and Fees: Local guides await, ready to share stories and ensure your safety. Yes, there’s a fee, but consider it an investment in wonder. And amidst the crowd of fellow explorers, you’ll find camaraderie in shared awe.

Me and 2 of my friends went there to enjoy nature at its finest. We enjoyed taking pics of us with the natural light streaming from the holes of the cave. We even had a swim around the cave pool, which was deep! There’s stories behind the cave, which you can read at the entrance of the cave. Location: Located at Dauis, Bohol, it’s easily reachable from Tagbilaran Port via a 20min’s tuktuk bike drive. (Around 300 pesos). Details: Entrance fee is 50 pesos, with additional top-up of 75 pesos to swim inside the cave! Go early at opening time of 8.30am to beat the crowd so that you can take nice pictures! Closes at 4pm so don’t come too late. It’s open everyday, unique thing is it’s restricted to foreigners only on weekends to accommodate for the influx. Prone to overcrowding! Others: There’s life vests and even a life buoy provided for non-swimmers to soak themselves inside the cave pool. Be careful, the entrance to the cave is a flight of steep stairs down, which can be slippery. It’s also very narrow so 2-way traffic is just not possible. There are bats on top of the cave! Attire: Wear non-slip shoes/sandals if possible. We wore our swimsuits inside our clothes then went into the cave to take off. We then changed to dry clothes outside the cave - there are public toilets available.

Stepping into Hinagdanan Cave is like entering another world. Sunlight filters through openings in the cave ceiling, illuminating the impressive stalactites and stalagmites that adorn the cavern. It's surprisingly spacious, and the well-maintained steps make it easy to navigate – no need for a guide or any fancy equipment. While the initial sight is impressive, I couldn't help but feel it lacked a certain "wow" factor, especially if you've explored caves before. The main attraction here is undoubtedly the underground pool. For an extra fee (₱125 vs. the ₱50 entrance fee), you can take a dip in the cool, clear water. While the pool is refreshing, the experience felt a bit underwhelming. The water is relatively shallow, and the constant stream of tourists can make it feel crowded. Honestly, the geological formations above were more captivating than the swim itself. If you're a seasoned spelunker, Hinagdanan Cave might leave you wanting more. However, it's a decent option for families with young children or those who are curious about cave exploration but prefer a less challenging experience. The easy access and safe environment make it a convenient stop, especially if you're already exploring nearby attractions in Bohol. Just don't expect to be blown away.

I went in the cave but did not swim. Was there primarily for a shoot. I dipped my foot just to get a feel of the water, it wasn't the cold as I expected it to be which is good. Notes to consider though. There is only 1 way in. So the entrance is the exit. Its steep concrete steps with low headroom. But the administrators have complete signs around the area to give warning to be careful when you go down/up because of the low headroom. There's a short concrete path leading to the pool. Careful because its wet. But the concrete path is nicely done with steel handrails which you can hold on to. Nice place to cool down but cannot stay long because there are no areas to lounge from. The pool is surrounded by rocks where you can temporarily drop your stuff but not really stay a long time. Some rocks are sharp because it is a natural cave.
