Great place to visit on a sunny day. This fort initially built in 1580 was the residence of Antonio Salazar, the Prime Minister that ruled Portugal from 1932 to 1968. It was abandoned for years but has now been somewhat cleaned up and was opened to the public just last year, so it is still somewhat unknown and not flooded with local or foreign tourists. We really enjoyed our time there. note that only bathroom facilties are available - no coffee shop or other tourist facilities. There are some info brochures available....

Over centuries, this and other forts were adapted. This one served as a military school at some point in time and President Salazar spent a lot of time here - like each year a certain period.
