It is part of the Costa Azul, in Arrábida Natural Park. Some scholars point to the date of 310 BC for the founding of a settlement on the current location, fortified at the time of Romanization of the Iberian Peninsula in 106, by a Praetor of Lusitania, named Áulio Cornelius. Modern archaeological research proves, however, that the subsequent occupation of this site was uninterrupted, initially by the Visigoths and later the Muslims, the latter responsible for the primitive fortification between the eighth century and the ninth, greatly expanded between the tenth century and the 12th.

The best castle in Portugal, in my opinion and experience. It is free for all. It has a breath-taking view of the Sado Estuary, Setúbal, Troia Peninsula, Arrabida Mountains and Palmela. This is a must-visit historic tourist spot. It has a museum so one can learn its history. It has souvenir shops, a cafe and a hotel, Pousada de Palmela. It is about 50kms from Lisbon and 14-ish kms from Setúbal.

Lovely castle with fortess to walk around. Great views, have some informative signs in certain places. Insidw the castle have a tapas place and tile shop. Outside castle has a bar-twstaurant. Tapas place and restaurant you gotta check for opening times, as when we where there, it was closed. Great walk. In about intermediate speed walking takes approx 30min to see all. Very enjoyable

Nice castle to see, but nothing really exceptional. To be honest it won't be my first options, since there are so many beautiful places in Sintra, however still good to visit if you are somewhere nearby. There is a beautiful view on the nearby villages and wine yards. If you would like to stay somewhere nearby, at the same location there is an old posada, which looked beautiful.

Exploring a place rich in centuries-old history is truly fascinating. The elevated viewpoints and overall ambiance are quite impressive. Ascending the entrance feels reminiscent of navigating a traditional cobblestone fort ramp. There are well-equipped facilities for a break from walking or escaping wind, along with a welcoming café and taverna offering delightful local treats.

What a pleasure and privilege to visit a place with so many centuries of history. Great vantage points and location. Going uphill near the entrance feels like a traditional ramp up a fort (all cobblestone of course), decent facilities for when you need a break from the walking or the heat, and also friendly cafe and taverna for local treats.
