Where to find black sand beaches in Madeira (save & share this post): As a volcanic island Madeira has quite a few black sand beaches, something not super common in Europe. 1. Seixal Beach, the beach in the video here is in Seixal, Madeira about 45 minute drive from Funchal (where most tourists stay) on the NW part of the island. This beach is great for surfing and surf lessons are offered here by Madeira Surf Center. 2. Praia Formosa right in Funchal is a mix of Black sand and pebbles so be sure to wear water shoes here.  3. Ribeira Brava beach is also a mix of Black sand and pebbles but perfect for swimming as it’s protected from waves so extremely calm. It’s about 20 minutes from Funchal. 4. Prainha Beach is one of the most popular black beaches in Madeira, 30 minutes from Funchal in the NE corner of the island. 5. Laje or Jamaica Beach also in Seixal. 6. Clube Naval de São Vicente Beach which has kayaking, fishing and very popular for surfing. I’ve also been to a green and pink sand beach but there is also a red sand beach! Have you been to a beaches other than the typical white/yellow sand? Follow @thetravelingchild for more travel tips! #seixal #seixalportugal #travelreels

Seixal is a small but very picturesque coastal village on the island of Madeira.

Seixal is famous for its beaches. Praia da Laje beach is covered with black, sparkling and surprisingly soft sand. The absence of waves, the crystal clear water, the rocks covered with lush vegetation and the waterfalls falling over them complete the list of Seixal's advantages.

The calmness of the water in the lagoon is monitored by a breakwater installed on the right side of the beach. The gently sloping shore, smoothly turning into the ocean, relieves the fear of...

We went swimming and snorkelling here! It was lovely, we saw nice marine life and even an octopus. We went on a super warm and calm day in October so there were only small waves and a slight current. Never go in this water if you can’t swim well and be aware that going in and back out are quite dangerous due to the big rocks. Usually the waves and current are strong here...
