Met with many tour guides on my hike up to cable car from the train station...letting visitors know that cable car rates have been increased. 150 lei for roundtrip to the rock formations trail ($$ more to go further). They offered their services for the same $ for a 5 hour tour including all the sites! (I would have accepted but I didn't have enough time). Prior reviews mentioned the poor management of the ticketing office to the condition of equipment...I arrived around 0930 and stood in line for 50min. During that time there were obviously some upset customers - gesturing & talking loudly (I didn't understand what was being said,). But considering there were only about 50 people in line and supposedly the ticket office had been open for an hour and no cable cars were moving up the mountain I felt that I would not have time to complete the summit and meet my afternoon train. I chose to leave the que and ended up finding a beautiful forest trail(s). (Again, suggested by the tour guys!) 1 led to the Howling waterfall and the other takes you up to the top of the mountain bypassing the cable car entirely! If you love hiking, forests, and have the whole day to dedicate to Bucegi then I highly recommend the trails! I wasn't able to complete the path, but I much preferred my time in the woods than waiting in a qué wasting part of my day. Unless you have your heart set on the lift ride itself, avoid it! Just please remember to Leave No Trace - and take out what you bring in. There were many signs of...
Read moreNice fast route up to the mountains but it's pretty expensive. 170 lei return for the cable car and you also need to pay 10 lei for a ticket to enter the national park, the later being valid for 3 months. 90 lei for one way, half price for under 12s. You can also take a bike but I'm not sure how much that costs. Card payment is available for the ticket but that national park ticket is cash only. Pleased it's still open in mid-October and a few people around but no queue. Runs every 30 minutes on the hour and half past at a minimum, with extra runs if it's busy. Be aware that the last descent is at 1545. Last ascent 1500.
Also be aware of scammers on the road up to the cable car, saw several trying to sell even more expensive tickets and overpriced lifts. Buy tickets from the ticket office at the cable car (it's up...
Read moreThe cable car is closed since 2018.11.01. There are people there with SUVs that will take you up to the Piatra Arsa for 80 RON on the Transbugeci (claiming they have authorization to do so).
The Transbucegi road starts with a sign that says closed to the public, yet there is no barrier or checkpoint. The road has recently been paved (2017) it is a narrow but good quality road, it is cleaned from snow (I have seen 2 snow ploughs working) and you can park your car at the Piatra Arsa. Many people do this. I have not seen any way of checking for the authorization or any police presence giving out fines to people who go up on this road but I have seen tens of cars from different counties parked at the parking lot there in the afternoon. It is a 1/2 hour hike from Piatra Arsa...
