The Iron Gates Region Museum (Romanian: Muzeul Regiunii Porţilor de Fier) is a museum in Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Romania. The exhibits include natural sciences (fauna and flora, an aquarium for the Danubian fauna and exotic fish), history, documents, archaeology (including prehistoric finds from Schela Cladovei, Roman finds from Drobeta and a lapidarium), numismatics, ethnography (costumes, pottery, textiles from Mehedinți and the Iron Gate areas).[3]

The history - archaeology department comprises nine halls: Prehistory - the vestiges of the material and spiritual life of the Schela Cladovei culture, the Daco-Roman Wars, ancient Roman monuments (the bridge at Drobeta from the years 103 - 105), Mediaeval History, the Modern Age, Romanian Feudal Art and the Contemporary Age.

The natural sciences exhibition, inaugurated on 15 May 1972, presents the physical and geographical conditions of the Iron Gates Gorge, (Hall 1), the flora and fauna of the Iron Gates Gorge (Hall 2), the Danubian ichthyofauna of the Iron Gates storage basin (aquarium), and the water fauna in the Iron Gates region. The exhibition closes with aspects relating to cosmogony, paleontological evidence (testimonies regarding the origin and evolution of man).

The ethnography and folk art department holds a precious rich heritage, bearing documentary value. The exhibition presents first of all aspects on the rural civilization in the Iron Gates region. The museum owns goods listed in the National Cultural Heritage Treasures list.

Modern Romanian fine arts are also represented, with works by Luchian, Petrașcu, Pallady, Tonitza, Dimitrescu, Șirato,...

This museum is an absolute MUST SEE if you are anywhere near Drobeta! I actually took a detour to see it and was so glad I did. Unlike most museums in Bucharest that are “in process” of a renovation, this museum has recently finished a ten year renovation and it shows. It’s an outstanding experience!

I could not believe the value for the entrance price, you start with the Neolithic era (amazing artifacts) and move forward through history. Of particular note is the room containing the miniature replica of Trajan’s Bridge with much info on the architect, the Dacian/Roman wars, etc. But you’ll continue local history right up till today.

But then you flow into the ethnographic area, which leads to a geological area, and just when you think there cannot possibly be more… you end up in the basement aquarium! I kid you not, an aquarium of Danube fish! And all of it is very interesting.

Then you go outside to see the last remains of the bridge, the ruins of the Roman fort, and the baths and amphitheater that have recently been discovered. What an outstanding museum and what a wonderful experience for me. The women who guide you through the museum are so welcoming as was the town itself.

You can visit in a few hours, but I’d allow a day to see both this and the reconstructed medieval fort just a few blocks up the same road. The town comes alive in the evening around the fountains in the center park, it’s well worth staying a night to really...

Podul lui Traian de la Drobeta. Prima parte.

Great place to visit if you are in Drobeta Turnu Severin. The ticket price for adult is 24 Ron(~5euro) and for children's is 6 Ron(~1,1euro).The place it is in great condition as it was renovated recently which will make a great adventure for everybody. Also it is an Aquarium that is in the same price ,but also a Planetarium for which you have to pay extra 11 Ron(~2euro) for adults and 3 Ron(~0,6euro) for children's. Time spent inside about an hour without Planetarium. For planetarium you will spend another 45 minutes.

It was a little confusing at first but this museum is combined with the Castrul Drobeta so you can see both with one ticket. The museum offers a lot to see from animals and wildlife, to the history of the Gates and how they were built, including a fascinating multi-media presentation of how each component of the gate was built. The folk art and ethnography offered a great insight into clothing and rugs from different time periods. Overall a fascinating rainy day that taught me a lot about the history of the area.
