The future Hollywood star, winner of the Oscar, was born on July 11, 1920 in the Brinner family, who played a large role in the history of Vladivostok. In honor of his grandfather, Julius Ivanovich Brinner, who was a major fish and gold miner, he was named Julius. 율브리너 생가 본명은 타이제 칸(Taidje Khan)이다. 러시아의 블라디보스토크에서 몽골의 광산 기사와 루마니아 집시 사이에 태어났다. 13세 때 나이트클럽에서 발라드를 불렀으며 그후 프랑스에서 서커스 곡예사로 활동하던 중 사고를 당하여 곡예사 활동을 중단하고 1940년대 초 유랑극단의 배우가 되었다.

1946년 《류트 송 Lute Song》에서 동양의 왕자역을 맡아 성공을 거두었으며 1948년부터 1951년까지 텔레비전 디렉터로 활동하다가 1951년 브로드웨이에 진출하여 뮤지컬 《왕과 나 The King and I》에서 주역을 맡아 크게 성공했다. 이 연기로 토니상을 수상했고 공연 횟수는 자그마치 1,246회에 이른다.

영화 《왕과 나》(1956)에도 주연으로 출연하여 매력적이면서도 약점이 있는 전제군주의 역할을 훌륭히 연기하여 커크 더글러스(Kirk Douglas)와 제임스 딘(James Dean) 등과 경합한 그해 아카데미상 시상식에서 남우주연상을 수상했다. 이후 왕의 역을 하기 위해 삭발한 머리를 자신의 트레이드마크로 삼았다.
