Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy (Russian: Выставка достижений народного хозяйства, Vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva, abbreviated as VDNKh or VDNH, Russian: ВДНХ, pronounced  is a permanent general purpose trade show and amusement park in Moscow, Russia.Between 1991 and 2014 it was also called the All-Russia Exhibition Centre (Russian: Всероссийский выставочный центр). It is a state joint-stock company. 1935–1939 construction

The exhibition was established February 17, 1935 as the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition (VSKhV) (Russian: Всесоюзная Сельско-Хозяйственная Выставка; Vsesoyuznaya Selsko-Khozyaystvennaya Vystavka). An existing site (then known as Ostankino Park, a country territory recently incorporated into the city limits), was approved in August 1935. The master plan by Vyacheslav Oltarzhevsky was approved in April 1936, and the first show season was announced to begin in July 1937 and was design as a "City of Exhibitions" with streets and public spaces, which was very common in the 1930s of the 20th century. However, plans did not materialise, and three weeks before the deadline Joseph Stalin personally postponed the exhibition by one year (to August 1938). It seemed that this time everything would be ready on time, but again the builders failed to complete their work, and regional authorities failed to select and deliver proper exhibits. Some pavilions and the 1937 entrance gates by Oltarzhevsky were torn down to be replaced with more appropriate structures (most pavilions were criticised for having no windows). According to Oltarzhevsky's original plan, all of the pavilions were to be constructed from wood. In 1938, a government commission examined the construction and decided that it did not suit the ideological direction of the moment. The exhibition was considered too modest and too temporary. Oltarzhevsky was arrested, together with the Commissar for Agriculture and his staff, and eventually released in 1943. Later, he worked on the 1947-1953 Moscow skyscraper project.

As a result, in August 1938 Nikita Khrushchev, addressing the assembled Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union, declared that the site was not ready, and the opening was postponed until August 1939. It finally opened on 1 August 1939, and was open to the public between 08:00 and 23:00 until 25 October with a daily attendance of 40,000. The 1940 and 1941 seasons followed but following German invasion in 1941 the exhibition was closed until the end of World War II.

1948–1959 renovationEdit

In October 1948 the State ordered the renewal of the Exhibition, starting with the 1950 season. Again, the opening was postponed more than once; the first post-war season opened in 1954 (still as Agricultural exhibition). In the 1956 season the planners set aside an Industrial area within the main territory; more restructuring and rebuilding followed. In 1959 the park was renamed Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy (Russian: Выставка Достижений Народного Хозяйства, Vystavka Dostizheniy Narodnovo Khozyaystva) or ВДНХ/VDNKh.

VDNH (All-Russian Exhibition Center) is a stunning place to get leisure. There are many ways to entertain yourself, family and children. In addition to the fact that VDNH is a historical place with a large number of pavilions dedicated to different republics of the former Soviet Union, there are also many modern ways to have fun here. In wintertime, it is a huge (the biggest as I'm informed) ice rink that is really affordable (also available with your own skates), in other seasons a lot of sidewalks and paths are perfect for just walking and riding a bike. As for me, I'm a huge fan of the GREAT WALKING ALLEY that was constructed recently. Its length is more than 5km (or about 3.2miles). Its shape like a bulb with a base at the main entrance of VDNH. It's really interesting. Take a tour of it to observe different landscapes including a reservoir with fountains.

If you are an avid photographer, you will definitely find ways to take a lot of cool pictures of both the complex itself and the square area of VDNH. Some pavilions are made in the style of the Renaissance. For example, rabbit breeding pavilion. Its number is 44. It's under reconstruction at the moment. However, I took great pictures of its facade. I'm not aware much of the pavilions in detail, it's up to you what of them to visit and find out more. I just totally recommend visiting the pavilion Космос which reveals the history of space shipbuilding and space exploration in 60th and 70th of the last century. Just in front of the pavilion, the space ship ВОСТОК is represented that is the exact copy of the original one. Yuri Gagarin, the first astronaut made the first manned flight in the Earth history into the space on just such a ship. That's really great to look at it from a short distance! I liked the bottom view of the huge nozzles. There is a helicopter МИ-8, СУ-27 fighter, reusable space shuttle БУРАН on the square. They are fairly symbolic, convey the spirit of the Soviet Union. I liked the pavilion where the scope mock of Moscow City constructed. It's highlighted with illumination and looks like a real city. Take pictures and send them to your friends, nobody will distinguish that it's the scope mock, not the real City😂

For your convenience, there is two subway stations nearby VDNH - ВДНХ and Ботанический Сад. If your choice is the main entrance you need to get off the subway at ВДНХ station, if you prefer getting park area get off at Ботанический Сад station southern exit, 5 minutes walking to the destination. By the way, the bus #533 links both subway stations and the route runs just through the area of VDNH with plenty of stops. One more way to see attractions 😉 In a word, you should visit this place and choose the type of leisure suitable for you. Very crowded at weekends. Admission is free, 24 hours open.

I rate it...

A wonderful huge complex of monumental buildings of great value as the history of the USSR. But it creates a dual impression. I was in the USSR in the late 80s and visited this place. Then it simply blew your mind and you were speechless, it was so surprising and delightful just to be here. At the moment, the buildings themselves, structures, constructions, fountains produce the same effect of wild delight. But. It is a great disappointment that most of the pavilions are closed and are no longer used. Some of the pavilions are used as government office buildings or are used commercially. Some have exhibitions at the level of a yard fair. Even in the "Cosmos" pavilion, despite the paid entrance, half of the exhibits are inaccessible. But from the point of view of the history of the USSR, there is something to see here. By the way. In front of the "Cosmos" pavelion there is old interesting equipment: the Vostok rocket of the first man in space (of course, a full-size model), a real Mi-8 helicopter (an old helicopter developed in 1968), a real passenger narrow-body aircraft Yak-42 (an old aircraft developed in 1975), the famous Su-27 fighter (a military aircraft of 1977). All this is undoubtedly history that you can touch, and for a certain fee, even sit in the cabin. Of course, the fountains, buildings and structures have a simply mind-blowing effect. A beautiful large green area. There is a wonderful rose garden. Just a good place for walks and relaxation. In any case, I recommend it, despite the general neglect. Be sure to visit while this place is still accessible to visitors and has not died completely. It is worth it.
