ION Orchard — Attraction in Singapore

My husband and I decided to visit Ion Mall before heading back to Australia—it’s one of the few places we actually enjoy shopping at when we’re in Singapore. We did have some great encounters with helpful salespeople and overall enjoyed a good shopping experience inside the mall, which was refreshing. encountered some good sales person and good people inside the mall.

In the evening, we needed to use the washroom before meeting some friends for dinner. I was holding two water bottles and decided to leave them on the corner of the benchtop. After using the washroom, I overheard a ‘Chinese lady,’ who appeared to be a supervisor, talking to the cleaner with a very annoyed expression. She was complaining about my water bottles. I politely informed her that the bottles belonged to me. She then, in the most sarcastic tone, said, ‘Can you please not put your water bottles here? There’s something I can’t get.’

Naturally, I asked, ‘I beg your pardon?’ To which she replied, ‘There are VIPs coming to the washroom.’ I explained that I had left the water bottles there for personal hygiene reasons, as I didn’t want to carry them into the toilet and risk contamination. She repeated her line about VIPs and said, ‘Thank you, but please put your water bottles behind the mirror.’

So, I asked, ‘How exactly do you expect me to pull out the mirror and place them behind the cabinet?’ She replied in a fast tone and impatient tone, ‘Well, ask the cleaner where to put your water bottles.’ Funny thing was, there wasn’t a cleaner around when I arrived, and hardly anyone was even using the toilet.

This whole situation highlights the ‘kiasu’ mentality, where they focus so much on their role and rules without realizing the basic fundamentals of respecting others. Apparently, everyone in the mall is a VIP now—who knew? Without the regular patrons, I’m sure Ion Mall could still host those private events at Christian Dior with all those ‘famous influencers,’ right? What would they do without us?

I cant help but wonder: does this "Supervisor" get the same level of respect from her coworkers, or is it just her "role" that demands it? Because respects seems to be a two-way street, and from what I saw, it wasnt exactly...
