The only reason I buy things from this Sheng Siong Supermarket in Ang Mo Kio is because it is along the way when I buy dinner daily for my mom from the coffeeshops. Undeniably, there is a vast array of foodstuff and fruits to buy, compared to the other stores in the vicinity. The prices are reasonable, standard market rates. The service is dependent on the staff. The cashiers are mostly South East Asian foreign talent ladies and friendly. And the staff minding the safe entry gateway and thermo scanners are locals who take delight in being the know-it-all trace together app expert when for some reason, the safe entry gateway cannot sync with the running trace together mobile app and does not beep, giving them the opportunity to gleefully inform you that you cannot go into the store, and in case you still did not know, that your app is not working. I guess it gets boring minding the safe entry gateway. The worst and nastiest gateway gatekeepers are the uncles. Woe be it if an uncle is standing among the merchandise in the narrow passageway and you need to "excuse me" to pass through. The uncle would sting eye you for disturbing his standing spot. And don't bother asking them if you cannot locate the price of an item. The rude tone and answer would be "it is all there" in mandarin. And if you point out that the price displays are for other items, it is not unusual for the uncles to jab their finger on the package to inform you that the price is there. It is not. Usually, the uncles are merely jabbing at the packaging description or ingredients. Point out to them again, and they would keep quiet and stare straight ahead. I guess their job is just to mind the safe entry beeps and thermoscanner...
Read moreA neighbourhood supermarket that closes late, around 11pm.
If you need 24 hour options, there is an NTUC a 15-minute walk away in one direction (near the mosque) and a Giant a 10-minute walk away in another direction (near Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West park). About a 20-minute walk away, there is another 24 hour Sheng Siong in the vicinity (along Avenue 3).
It is small and crowded and sometimes I feel they don't treat their fish and frozen foods that well.
However, I always go to this Sheng Siong because they sell Alvas Yogurt. It is locally made, tastes like real yogurt instead of the crappy famous-brands stuff that have the gelatinous texture of thickened gravy. (NTUC had it for a short time, but took it off its shelves.) Alvas Yogurt is cheaper and better.
And, if you really like Alvas Yogurt, you can get a massive large tub from the Sheng Siong along Upper Thomson Road at Thomson Imperial Court.
Update 5 Nov: now expanded from 2 to 3 shop lots. Update 10 Jun 2017 Alvas yogurt in large 3 sizes up to the 500g tub...
Read moreThis place has most of the fresh items you need from a wet market. Staff are helpful and always cheerful. Love their fresh Indonesian pork counter where their staff can mince and chop the part you choose. Their seafood counter is manned by a very polite and cheerful guy who does a very good job in cleaning your fish. Note that these 2 counters only operates in the morning and early afternoon. From late afternoon to evening, you can still buy the pre-packed ones. The fresh vegetable section has a good variety to choose from. Can be rather busy during the weekend morning and festive seasons. But I am not too bothered by it as all the staff (including the cashiers) work at good speed! There was an occasion where the cashier scanned the wrong barcode and a higher amount was paid. I went back 3 days later and another cashier promptly gave me a refund with a smile. Will definitely come back to this...
