Devín Castle belongs to the main attractions of Bratislava. This charming castle ruin rises on a high cliff above the confluence of the rivers Danube and Moravia. Visitors come here not only to learn about the history, but also to enjoy the beautiful view that comes from the upper castle and the ubiquitous natural scenery just like from a fairytale. Devín Castle together with Nitra Castle and Bratislava Castle belongs to the oldest historically documented castles in Slovakia. After the Celts left, between the 1st and the 4th century, thanks to its strategic location, Devín became part of the border defence system – Limes Romanus. In the 9th century, Prince Rastislav built a massive Great Moravian fortress there. In the 13th century, the royal border fort was built in the area of the upper castle, while additional building modifi cations took place between the 15th and 17th centuries. In 1809, the castle was destroyed by Napoleonic troops. In the caves of the upper castle there is a permanent exhibition of Devín Castle in the 13th - 20th century, which is located in the attractive premises of the castle rock. at the Renaissance Palace, visitors can admire the commemorative plaque reminding of the historical trip of Slovak youth to Devín, organized by Ľudovít Štúr in 1836. Devín Castle can be reached easily by car or public transport (bus line number 29). Devín is by means of a port on the Danube interconnected with Austria. Boarding a ship, you can travel further to Hainburg or back to Bratislava. During the season, performances of historical fencers or other accompanying events take place in the castle. Visitors can also try their skills in javelin, or axe throw, or archery.

A Timeless Gem Where History and Nature Converge. Nnestled majestically atop a picturesque hill overlooking the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers, is a true treasure for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. As a visitor, I was captivated by the awe-inspiring beauty, rich heritage, and breathtaking vistas that Castle Devin offers. Approaching the castle, I was immediately struck by its imposing silhouette against the backdrop of the stunning natural surroundings. The ancient stone walls, towers, and ramparts stood as testaments to centuries of history and resilience. The well-preserved ruins exuded a sense of grandeur, transporting me to a bygone era. Exploring the castle grounds was a journey back in time, filled with fascinating discoveries and historical insights. The informative signage and exhibits provided a glimpse into the castle's past, sharing stories of battles, royalty, and the lives of those who once inhabited these walls. The atmospheric ruins, secret passageways, and hidden chambers sparked my imagination, allowing me to envision the castle's former glory.

Impressive castle ruins in the outskirts of Bratislava. Very impressive castle ruins situated right by the Danube and Morava rivers. So you have a very scenic and picturesque location with the rivers, mountains in the east and the whole castle ruin. Entry is charged and cost 5€ per adult but in my opinion is well worth the cost to go and take a look inside. Since they have the whole surroundings that you can see very well from the top of the ruins and exhibition with items and history of the castle. Parking is also available right underneath the castle and is free and spacious so will not be any problem finding a parking spot. We went the during the summer months on a Tuesday and while it was a lot of people i didn't feel cramped while visiting most of the locations in the castle ruins. And buying a ticket had no queue at all. So if your in Bratislava then set some time away to see this since it's really worth the time.

Visited Devin castle today. Wow. Very cold but we were well wrapped up.It is very early in the season so it was lovely and quiet. Not much open but brought a picnic ourselves. It was so nice to leisurely walk around at ones own pace. Spectacular views from almost every point. A really beautiful place, majestic and austere. So easy to get there from Bratislava. Took the no 29 bus from under the UFO bridge. Took about 20mins on the bus. We forget to get spare bus tickets for the return trip. So we walked for about 10 mins to the next town, heading towards Bratislava, and bought tickets there at a coin only machine. There was a fairly big supermarket also in the town. Met a lovely lady called Maria at the bus stop and we did our best to chat in pigeon Slovak and English. Good idea, as someone else said, to have a couple of spare tickets whenever you are wandering around just in case. Well worth a visit to hrad Devin.

Fantastic but relatively hidden gem just 20 min away from Bratislava. It has amazing views of 2 rivers merging on one side and beautiful hills on the other side. One can totally imagine the strategic location and importance of such a castle. There’s plenty of free parking. You will have to take a short 10-15 min hike to the top for the best views. The tickets are reasonable - 6 euros for adults, 3 euros for kids and seniors. There’s also a family ticket for 12 euros that includes 2 adults and all kids under 14 years. Just about half way to the top, there are some nice interactive demonstrations led by castle staff. There’s small permanent exhibition in the castle. But the view from top is definitely the best highlight. There are a couple of restaurants right in the parking lot that also serve ice cream.

Devín Castle: A castle ruin built on a high rock towering above the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers is one of the most important historical and archaeological localities in Central Europe. Moreover, it offers enchanting natural scenery with unrepeatable views. The Great Moravian Mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius: May it be a map, leaflet, or book about Saints Cyril and Methodius that you come across or perhaps you will hear, right at the foot of the Devín Castle, bits of the castle’s history from an innovative infopanel, or you may simply use the Storymap, the electronic guide when travelling along the Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius, where you can learn about historical sights and places linked to the Great Moravia bearing the legacy of the Thessaloniki brothers.
