St. Catherine is the patron Saint of Alexandria, Egypt, and as a fellow Alexandrian, she holds a special place in my heart.
This church, simple and un-assuming from the outside, is full of history.
During the 1800s, a treasure was found in front of the church! It is said that it was buried there by some French crusader.
Another trivia is that, during the old days, when people surrounding the church saw the enemy coming, they lit the church‘s tower, signifying to the nearby village that the enemy, is coming. This is of course due to the fact that the church is up the hill, and enjoys a bird‘s eye view of the scenery.

Read moreThe Church of St Catherine was built in Gothic style circa 1400. The extensive views from the church made it a good lookout post during the Ottoman in the 15 - 18 century. The villagers would watch for bonfire alarm signals on surrounding similar hills with churches. There is a belief that treasure hidden under the entry to this church. Read moreVisite during the visit of the Vintgar Gorge. The gorge is beautiful, but the way back to the parking lot through the church of St. Katrina is just amazing. You need to walk steep hill for a few meters, but you will walk through the green pastures, among sheep, goats, and horses, where you will enjoy unforgettable views of the Karawanke and Julian Alps. It is beautiful here and compared to the gorge there is minimum tourists here....
