The Radovna river cuts the Vintgar gorge deep between the hills of Hom and Boršt. It is flanked by steep slopes overgrown with beech forests.
Locals have always viewed the gorge with awe and respect. It was discovered in 1891 by Mr Jakob Žumer, the mayor of Gorje, and Mr Benedikt Lergetporer, a cartographer and photographer from Bled. Both were amazed by the beauty and the mysterious character of this natural attraction. In 1893 the gorge was opened to the public. Constructing a secured tourist trail through the wild gorge was a demanding and an extremely dangerous undertaking.
The roar of the fettered Radovna river echoes along the 1,600m-long gorge, full of small waterfalls, rapids, and erosion potholes where the river briefly slows down its pace. Trails, narrow passages, and bridges lead a visitor to the end of the gorge, witch is marked by the magnificent 16m-high waterfall Šum, the highest fluvial waterfall in Slovenia.

Read moreAmazing views, but the tourist information and the website contain wrong information. On two different pages on the website, it said there would be a free shuttle from the main bus station in Bled, but there wasn't (it's only during a few months in the year). When I tried to tell them about it, they pointed out that there was a third page (that I hadn't seen) with the correct information. They wouldn't even acknowledge that their website has wrong info (on two separate pages) and that it was misusing. They made it sound like I was the one at fault for not looking at every page on the website to try to find the right info (I googled how to get there and Google directed me to the "how to get there" page immediately, so I never even saw the homepage).
Two different people had the same attitude about this issue (a woman over the phone, and a man at the counter, face to face).
This was one of the worst customer experiences I have...
Read moreAbsolutely stunning, wonderful walk, I highly recommend the walk back too if you park at the gorge entrance.
The star deduction is for parking though... There's ample parking down at the entrance and another 2 car parks at the top of the road, however these are manned by staff who said we couldnt park our van there (sprinter) to go back to a backyard of a house charging €10!! We chose to park further away into the houses which they overall don't want people doing so... Brings me to my point of disappointment when we walked down and there was sooo much space still to park, with campers bigger than ours in there but we were chosen not to? I didn't understand at all why some were allowed some werent (all various countries numberplates not locals) The parking system really needs work around the entrance.
Definitely pre book your ticket online, we walked straight through past a huge que...
