We visited Štanjel Castle over the weekend, mainly because of my interest in Lojze Špacal, and it turned out to be a wonderful experience! There is a permanent Špacal exhibition, but we also ended up exploring the castle’s interactive museum – and I must say, there are very few museums curated this well.
The museum is divided into two main parts: • The first section is about the Karst region, its nature, and culture. • The second part explores the Slovenian language in an engaging, modern way.
We spent nearly two hours discovering the Karst, learning about the Slovenian language, and finally admiring Špacal’s works. To our surprise, there was also a temporary exhibition of Zoran Mušič, which made the visit even more special.
To end the day, we enjoyed a delicious cake and ice cream in the castle’s beautiful courtyard restaurant – a perfect way to conclude the visit.
Highly recommended...

The Castle is a massive complext with houses where people live within the caste walls. You've got plenty to see not just the castle itself, but I do recommend a guided tour as there are gems you might miss like the Ferrari house (yes that Ferrari's house).
There's parking near (although I am not sure if it's paid or free). You also have a nice bar/restaurant in the summer courtyard of the castle and a great wine cellar. And at the top you have an awesome vantage point overlooking the whole...

In the court yard is a tourist information centre for the region and a restaurant, which was unfortunately closed when we were there. I heard you can also do tours through the castle. Entry to the complex is free! The Ferrari Garden is stunning and also provides a incredible view over the whole area! Definitely a must visit if...
