The Green Point Lighthouse, Cape Town is an operational lighthouse on the South African coast. First lit on 12 April 1824, it is located on Mouille Point.
Arriving on the Waterfront right around the sculpture of a pair of "big spectacles" and turning left from there, I first didn't see this lighthouse and just walked for about 1 km to Milton Beach which is not a particularly big beach in its length & width but big enough for people to set up tents and with a distinctive feature of a "rock pool" (in a pretty perfect square shape and one just filled with sea water right on the water's edge at just a short walk across the beach), so it was actually only on the way back along the Waterfront that I saw this lighthouse at some distance ahead (about 0.5 km further beyond the point where I first arrived) which yes was also quite a "charming one" I would say seeing close up upon arrival (seemingly no entry for the public) and also with quite a "wide expanse" of waterfront lawn right beside it before finally leaving the Waterfront and entering the Green Point Park (right across the street from the Lighthouse).
And yes, it was just overall a "nice & exhilarating" walk (for the total of about 1.5 km that I did between Milton Beach in the south & the Lighthouse in the north although the waterfront extends in both directions, I'm sure, considerably further) with the wide-open ocean right beside on one side & the city's waterfront buildings just after the "nicely-maintained grass" on the other side (no super-tall high-rises but just those of like no more than around 10 stories) where yes rising behind that "neat row" of buildings are the city's popular high grounds of Signal Hill & Lion's Head (no view of Table Mountain from this waterfront though, but which can be seen from the V&A Waterfront further north from the...
Read moreWhat a perfectly gorgeous lighthouse! It’s cute and can be seen from quite a distance but once one sees it, it calls to you. Indeed the first time I saw it I gasped in delight and was unable to stop at the time. But it never left my mind and I was compelled to return and spend time here. Its not open but still utterly adorable. The surroundings are really quaint and pretty too with the beautiful ocean waves crashing behind and lovely palm trees swaying in the breeze 🌴 Most importantly and really interesting is that this is the first solid lighthouse structure on the South African coast AND the first operational lighthouse in South Africa! Right here! Thats pretty amazing. Designed by sculptor, Herman Shutte, it took 2 years to build and began operating in 1824. Another interesting piece of history: a foghorn was added in 1926 despite protests from Green Point residents in 1923 who submitted dubbed this pretty landmark “Moaning Minnie” 😂 Theres so much history here. I hope they would open it up as a nautical library and/ or museum. Its too wonderful to not be...
Read moreA working piece of history, where you get to still see the same amazing shoreline that wrecked so many ships, but with this beacon of light, a real lighthouse, and one that has stood the test of time and hectic Cape Town weather, you are part of the history. The view is amazing and the walk is both beautiful and very social, so many people walking, finding bike, rollerblading and lots of social dogs, all add to the experience, as well as a mostly maintained play areas for kids, and toilet facilities fornwhen you just have to go. Parking can be tight, but after a short wait you generally find something. Enjoy the ambiance, the view and the history of the Green Point Lighthouse and surrounds. Ps awesome restaurants...
