Steenberg hotel and spa really knows how to make their guests feel at home. From the moment we arrived, we were treated almost like family come home. The lady that showed us to our villa, Nolene, did such an excellent job that I had no doubt where everything in the house was. It was also such a lovely treat on a cool evening to come in and find that a fire had been lit in the lounge and the underfloor heating switched on throughout.
We were exceptionally lucky with the weather and had spectacular views wherever we went on the farm. The lady that presented our wine tasting of the Flagship Range at Bistro 1682, Chanel, had an encyclopaedic knowledge of both the farm history and the wines, which combined to make the experience unforgettable. This, coupled with the fact that we took the 16:30 setting and had the sun climbing down the sky behind the mountains during the tasting, giving the beautiful tasting room a warm glow.
We had a lovely tapas dinner at the restaurant as well, and I can strongly recommend the beef tataki and the delicious chocolate dessert served with the salted caramel ice cream. The dessert really was a show-stopper as nothing was particularly sweet and yet rounded out the meal perfectly. The view of the lights of the Constantia valley on the clear evening when we returned to the hotel was the figurative cherry on top.
We woke up to the incredible view below from our bedroom the next morning with the sound of birds in the trees. The California king beds are a sumptuous luxury, with pillows and linens to match. Lounging around in a fluffy robe after a hot shower just enhanced the feeling of being on a cloud. We finished off our stay with a delicious breakfast at Tryn (with the most perfectly poached eggs that I have ever eaten!) and a short walk around the farm before heading out.
My only complaint about my stay is that it wasn't longer. I encourage the friendly and welcoming staff at the estate to keep up the great work. You are a credit to the Constantia valley, Cape Town, and South...
Read moreA very beautifully aesthetic spot with calming views. This seems to be a non-smoking venue. A lovely field making it a nice spot for children to play and adventure while the adults wine taste or have lunch at the restaurant adjacent to the tasting area. The security at the entrance is quite particular about means of entry, needing the driver's license as well. This immediately creates a safeguarded feel as you enter. The outdoor area is spacious and refreshing with shaded seating. My company and I had reserved in advance and arrived slightly early and had our seats already. When the tasting began we felt it was very rushed to begin, with minimal explanation about the wine and on some tasting no introduction other than the name of the bottle that was poured. I was hoping it to be an experience and found it to be lacking. If I wanted to just drink glasses of wine there are many other places to go. We were given one wine glass and a flute for the Cap Classique and no bucket for any excess wine, keeping in mind that the pouring was quite generous. I can say that the servers are attentive, since once we finished the glasses of wine we were immediately met with another. What altered my experience was when I overheard one of the female servers of a party of two young ladies who came for a tasting, when introducing the Cap Classique it was explained how it is made and a comment was passed that if you don't have a palette for this they'd be better suited for the cheap JC Le Roux which I found this not only distastefulbut also classist. My overall experience of the venue was pleasant but was left feeling that I was treated as someone trying to get drunk on a budget and less attention needed to be spent on us, perhaps because we are young women or perhaps we were a party of two. Regardless of the reason I felt the service to be sub-par and rather...
Read moreWe had booked for 3pm for the tasting, a lady at the bar was extremely unhelpful and unforthcoming. I was extremely upset because what was the point of me booking if I'm then going to be told it is full. She quite literally wanted us to sit in the sun. We asked if she could please then give us an umbrella, and she said she couldn't. We then said if we sit at the bar, can we sit where a group of people were sitting after they were done. She said "no, those people are still busy". At that point, we began to feel discriminated. She then abandoned us and said, "Let me know once you decide". My sister then spoke to Musawenkosi Nhlabathi, who helped us, honestly I'd ONLY rate this a 5 if this review was about him, he was an impeccable host. I was really upset about having wanted a wine tasting experience and flew in from so far and did my part by booking only to be met with hostility. Nonetheless, Musawenkosi really did us a solid but treating us like human beings and sharing his knowledge about wine. I sincerely wish him all the best in his future and will be forever grateful for his kindness towards us. I will, however, never visit Steenberg...
