The museum is situated within an old school building almost in the centre of town. It opens at 8 a.m. and costs 100 rand for international visitors.
There’s on-road parking available, which is easy to find, and access to the museum is straightforward.
The layout is simple to follow, and the staff are friendly and helpful. The museum focuses on the ostrich trade — once the backbone of the region’s economy — as well as the origins and development of the town right through to the mid-1990s.
The displays are excellent, featuring period items arranged in realistic, atmospheric settings. I especially liked the recreated Victorian-era shop fronts — they really bring the history to life.

It promised to be an incredible experience and...
Read moreThe stars are for the excellent museum content only. Lacklustre staff, absent curator. We went on National museum day and there was nothing done to celebrate the day. We were the only visitors for the whole of the morning. Couldn't receive info on Friends of the museum, even drove back next day trying. Staff needs to be reminded there's more to keep a museum alive than some outings to schools and a speech competition. The right staff appointed could make this a golden must visit...
